Hello my lovelies! Emma here, your pink-tutu-loving, time-travelling blogger, and welcome back to another fantastically fashionable trip through history! Today's journey whisks us back to the glamorous era of Art Deco, the 9th September 1936, a date etched in history not only for its significance to the world of fashion, but also to the world of ballet. It was a time when leotards took centre stage, and today we're going to dive right into the glittering world of ballet fashion!
Oh, and just in case you missed my last post – that's number 932 for the ever-growing chronicle of my pink-tutu-filled time travels! – you can catch up on www.pink-tutu.com!
So, back to 1936. Now, the Art Deco movement had truly reached its peak, influencing not just architecture and interior design but fashion as well! It's easy to see why. The elegant lines, the bold geometric shapes, the vibrant colours – perfect for a stylish, eye-catching leotard. And 1936 was a golden era for leotards.
That morning, after a fantastically fulfilling street ballet performance (which, as you know, is how I finance my time travelling – so keep your eyes peeled for me when you’re out and about!), I took myself to the glittering boulevards of Paris, just for a little bit of sartorial inspiration. It was just a casual jaunt around the Rue de la Paix, don't you know! It's funny – the designers in those days really knew how to create an artfully chic leotard! Imagine a vibrant, cerulean blue leotard – sleek, with strategically placed geometric shapes and perhaps some eye-catching sequins. And who could resist a scarlet leotard, with its bold contrasting black stripes and a splash of vibrant gold trimming? But I especially love how those fashionistas had already started incorporating delicate floral embellishments and elegant swirls, drawing heavily on nature, just like the Art Deco era favoured. You know I just have to channel my inner creative spirit, so naturally I started imagining the perfect pink tutu, wouldn't you agree?!
I’m quite certain my pink time-travelling leotard (a most magical garment that lets me hop through time!), would have blended seamlessly into the stylish atmosphere. Its sparkling pink fabric would have glimmered against the vibrant fashion, a fitting reflection of that vibrant, energetic era.
And the Parisian ballets were dazzling! The choreographies, full of dynamic shapes and dramatic poses, absolutely demanded captivating costumes. Those intricate costumes and leotards, reflecting the trends of the era, often had elements of metallics and rich gemstones, the perfect counterpoint to the natural and minimalist design principles that we see in leotards today.
Enter The Ballet Russes de Monte Carlo: The Leotard Revolution
But it wasn't just fashion that captured my imagination. On that particular day, something truly groundbreaking was happening in the world of dance: the Ballet Russes de Monte Carlo, founded by a remarkable Russian dancer named Sergei Diaghilev, was celebrating their debut!
It's no secret I’m an ardent devotee of everything ballet – the choreography, the grace, the music! This particular performance, held at the beautiful Monte Carlo Opera House, was nothing short of legendary. A fusion of Russian and Western styles, the choreography was electrifying, infused with the beauty of tradition and the dynamism of modernity, making for a dazzling spectacle. But the story didn’t end there – the choreography was the perfect marriage with the most exquisite costumes designed by the esteemed artist and fashion icon, Léon Bakst. His leotards were a celebration of form and function. His leotard designs were quite the revelation – sleek, daring, and oh, so perfectly crafted to let the dancers move with effortless fluidity and express the emotions of the story. The leotard became an important symbol of athleticism, power, and beauty, and the story of The Ballet Russes de Monte Carlo, which introduced these innovative leotards to a worldwide audience, became truly legendary.
And then, naturally, the topic of tutus took centre stage, something very dear to my pink-tutu-loving heart! Imagine, my dears, these graceful and utterly romantic tutus in soft pastel shades of blue and rose. Their form was almost poetic in the way they played with layers, ruffles, and tulle to create breathtaking visual textures.
As always, my time travels always take me to the grandest performances. And this day was no exception! The Ballet Russes de Monte Carlo showcased three incredible pieces, all choreographed by the exceptional Bronislava Nijinska: the hauntingly beautiful “Les Biches,” a poignant narrative ballet called "Jeux," and, oh my word, did the world fall in love with "Le Train Bleu." Imagine a dazzling blue leotard with strategically placed lines that perfectly emphasised a dancer’s graceful movements. I could simply not resist taking in this ballet – each dance flowed with grace, beauty, and emotional depth.
I especially loved how each choreography and every single costume element highlighted the individual style and strengths of the beautiful dancers. Their grace, athleticism, and powerful presence completely captivated the audience.
As my trip to the 9th September 1936 ended, I felt overwhelmed with gratitude. The magic of the era, the elegance of the dance, the grace of the ballet, the innovation of leotard design – what an incredible gift. The time travel leotard was sparkling a little brighter than usual, reflecting that extra special energy, a wonderful reflection of this important date in leotard history, if I do say so myself!
