Hello, darlings! It’s Emma here, your resident pink tutu-clad time traveller, back with another enthralling journey into the fascinating world of leotard fashion. As I tap my sparkly pink toes in anticipation, we’re jetting off to February 2nd, 1938 – a truly glamorous year for the leotard! Get ready to twirl back through time with me, darlings, as we uncover the fabulous fashion trends of yesteryear!
This month’s post, number 950 on the Pink Tutu Travel Blog, is particularly exciting! 1938 is brimming with incredible fashion, from the elegant art deco style of the ballet world to the rise of the dance floor – just imagine the wonderful costumes I'm going to encounter!
Before we embark on this spectacular sartorial expedition, I must mention how thrilled I am with the success of my latest street ballet performance! I mean, it's quite hard not to be thrilled about a performance which ended with a flurry of donations and a standing ovation! Honestly, the Derbyshire locals absolutely love a good twirl! The income will fuel our time travel, allowing me to continue spreading the joy of the pink tutu far and wide!
Right, now for our time-hopping adventure!
My shimmering pink time-travelling leotard, hand-stitched by my own fair hands, shimmers beautifully as I activate the magical sequins, sending me swirling into 1938!
A Symphony of Styles
Arriving in London, my eyes are met with the spectacle of the city. And wow, the leotard scene is incredible! Firstly, I need to get a few outfit changes, just so we can fully appreciate the beautiful styles available at this point in history! I decide to check out Liberty’s of London – this iconic department store was the hub of glamorous attire, with their dazzling array of silks, satins, and exquisite trims. This is what I'd call the perfect place to be if you’re a vintage fashion enthusiast like myself!
Just imagining the fabrics – it’s enough to make me want to throw on a tutu and twirl right here, right now! I could spend hours lost in their world of wonder!
The leotards are magnificent! For starters, there are leotards made in delicate chiffons and soft silks, all expertly gathered and layered with gossamer sheer netting and delicate tulle! Such elegance, and I can already envision how I would incorporate a little sprinkle of that Victorian sensibility into a modern design for a future Pink Tutu collection! It’s all about being whimsical and charming, don’t you think?
Now, speaking of tulle – those layers and layers of tulle make for truly stunning ballet skirts. Think graceful bell shapes with delicate bows and lace trimmings - absolute perfection! My mind is brimming with creative inspiration! I can see those ballerina costumes perfectly, flitting and dancing across a grand stage, oh, to have been born in such a time of elegant fashion!
For the casual leotard wearers (we all know it happens - a touch of comfort and ease mixed with elegance - yes!), the knitted leotard comes into its own, featuring beautiful pastel shades of baby pink, powder blue and heavenly lilac, all made in the softest wool imaginable. It seems to be a classic that stood the test of time, as you can even find stunning examples of vintage wool leotards on the online auction sites, if you are truly determined to snag yourself a truly beautiful piece of history!
Taking in the Shows!
As always, my time travel includes a little performance-hopping to get a real feel for the theatrical world and leotard fashion. Today, it’s a trip to see the renowned ballet company, Sadler’s Wells!
They are presenting a sensational program of ballet masterpieces, featuring the legendary Alicia Markova - who can resist a good performance from this legend?! She simply embodies that grace and elegance so quintessentially ballet! The leotards in the show are exquisite, showcasing the timeless beauty of simple designs - the perfect blend of style and practicality for performance.
As I sit there in the velvet plush seat, the world seems to dissolve around me as the dancers transport me to their enchanting world!
Speaking of dancers – I also need to tell you all about the legendary Margot Fonteyn! Oh, her grace is truly a sight to behold – I'm even dreaming up new pink tutu-inspired routines in her honour! And it’s such a pleasure to know she's making such waves in the world of ballet right here and now in this glorious era!
And So, the Fashion Journey Continues!
My travels through this fashionable decade have given me a greater appreciation for the artistic styles and influences that have shaped our love of leotards and the dance world today. 1938, with its exquisite elegance, embodies a refined approach to fashion, highlighting how design is not merely about garments, but rather about artistry and beauty expressed through dance. It’s time to return to the present, full of ideas to enhance the world of Pink Tutu Fashion and inspire our fellow twirlers!
Do keep checking in each month, as I am always eager to share my exciting sartorial adventures in the world of pink tutus! And always, remember, embrace the power of fashion to express your unique and dazzling personality! Until next time, darlings, keep twirling!
Your ever so stylish and pink-tutu-obsessed,
Emma
