Hello darlings! It's your favourite pink tutu wearing, time-travelling ballerina, Emma, here with another exhilarating entry for your reading pleasure! Welcome to post number 957 on my beloved Pink-Tutu.com website - your go-to destination for all things tutu and leotard!
This month, my shimmering pink time-travelling leotard took me back to a rather exciting year in fashion: 1938! I must confess, it's a bit chilly in September in this era, so I had to wrap my own pink tutu with a luxurious fur coat to keep my toesies warm. But as always, the journey was more than worth it. This year was overflowing with gorgeous styles and trends that set the stage for the fashion future, including, you guessed it, some sensational leotards!
Let's twirl back in time and explore!
The Fashion Frenzy of 1938September 9th, 1938 dawned bright and colourful with the usual Parisian fashion houses abuzz. This year, the design emphasis was firmly on fluid lines, luxurious fabrics, and a strong influence from the Orient. Think graceful drapes, sumptuous silks, and bold embroidery - perfect for capturing that magical, exotic spirit!
The Rise of the "New Look"Even though the world wasn't quite ready for the full "New Look" revolution just yet (that would come a few years later!), 1938 marked a shift towards a more feminine and figure-flattering silhouette. Imagine sleek, draped dresses that cinched the waist and swirled around the legs - pure elegance! This trend found its way into dancewear as well, with leotards showcasing smooth, streamlined designs, often with flowing fabric accents. I even spied a few stunning dance outfits incorporating circular skirts and leg-o-mutton sleeves - so divine!
Leotards on the Catwalk (and the Stage)Now, darling, let's talk leotard fashion! While leotards were still mainly found in the realm of dance, 1938 saw them making inroads into the world of mainstream fashion. Imagine, if you will, elegant ladies flaunting a striking one-piece leotard beneath their stylish evening gowns, with only the leotard's sleeves peaking out. It was quite the glamorous statement! And when it came to stage performances, the dance scene was positively thriving with vibrant leotards that set the stage alight. Ballet, musical theater, and even vaudeville performances showcased a rainbow of colours and bold patterns - just delightful!
My Own Little Fashion Fiesta in 1938!Now, you can't travel through time in a sparkling pink leotard without finding some fabulous shopping opportunities, can you? Well, let me tell you, darling, my September 9th jaunt took me straight to the most divine department store in all of Paris - Galeries Lafayette! I was smitten by their opulent interior and their array of beautifully crafted leotards. The colours were a symphony for the eyes! Deep jewel tones like sapphire and emerald were my favourites.
I had to try on a few, of course, and even took home a beautiful Burgundy silk leotard with delicate, swirling embellishments on the shoulders - divine! But truly, the true treasure of my trip was finding a little local vintage shop tucked away in a quiet cobblestoned alley. In it, I discovered the most darling pair of 1930s vintage ballet shoes! These exquisite shoes were made of satin with intricate detailing and a slight pointed toe, oh so charming. And the colour - a rich blush pink, you see? Well, I practically had to grab them and hold onto them for dear life, and of course they fit my tiny little feet like a glove!
A Tutu-licious Evening of Ballet at the Palais GarnierAs it turned out, September 9th, 1938, was a night for a delightful ballet performance at the Palais Garnier! And let me tell you, I wouldn't miss it for the world! The Paris Opera Ballet was in full bloom, and they captivated the audience with a delightful adaptation of Swan Lake, the costumes, a symphony of elegant tutus and shimmering leotards - and don't even get me started on the breathtaking dancing! They showcased an impressive collection of vibrant pinks, graceful ivory, and a glorious sea of shimmering black and white swans. A truly mesmerizing ballet.
This little bit of dance history just makes me want to hit the stage! Come and catch me perform tonight at the London Royal Albert Hall! I will be showcasing the vintage ballet shoes from 1938 in a solo ballet performance.
That's all for this month's edition, my darlings! Stay tuned for another month's adventure on www.pink-tutu.com where we can share our love for everything pink, fluffy, and time-travelling!
Until then, happy twirling!
XOXO, Emma
