Post #965: A Twirl Through Time – 5th May 1939

Hello, lovelies! Emma here, your favourite pink tutu-clad time traveller, ready to take you on another fabulous journey through the wondrous world of leotard fashion! Today, I'm whisking us back to a very special date: 5th May, 1939. Fancy a little time-travel? Grab your favourite tutu (pink, of course!), let's go!

It was a glorious, sunny morning as I popped into my time-travelling pink-sparkling leotard – it feels like home, doesn't it? – and zipped off to Derbyshire, where I started this wild and wonderful life. I can't resist a trip back to my roots every now and then, and, of course, 5th May is always special – the day of the annual Derbyshire County Show! Now, I’m not sure what the dress code for a County Show was in 1939, but I just couldn’t resist twirling into the throng in my pretty pink tutu. Can you imagine?

You wouldn’t believe the stares, but it’s nothing a well-timed grand jeté or two can't solve. A few sheep and cows did their best to keep up, bless their woolly hearts! I even caught the eye of a dashing chap who reminded me awfully of Fred Astaire – I swear, his eyes twinkled with appreciation as I did a little pirouette in the sunshine. Of course, it’s much better to let history unfold at its own pace, and I wouldn't dream of disrupting a proper 1939 County Show, so I tucked my time machine back into my magical tutu pocket and, off I went again!

What's a time-travel blog without a glimpse of the leotard scene in 1939? This was a year of exciting things in leotard fashion. Dance wear was gaining momentum as a stand-alone style! Leotards were really beginning to become popular with both dancers and gymnasts. They were sleek, athletic, and increasingly favoured over those old, bulky one-piece suits.

The trend in 1939? Oh, it was all about simplicity, functionality and grace! I mean, who wouldn’t want to look good and feel comfortable while pirouetting across the stage? My oh my, were the leotards sleek! Smooth, close-fitting, and usually with simple detailing. Think classic shades of black and white, with pops of colour and maybe a hint of floral patterns thrown in. Ballet studios were becoming more popular across the country, with the London School of Ballet setting the pace, attracting everyone who dreamed of being a professional dancer. The glamour of a ballerina - oh, it was almost tangible! You could say the stage was set for a new era of leotards - the age of grace, of beautiful movement and freedom of expression.

And who could forget those incredible vintage dance shoes? Imagine a sleek satin point shoe, perhaps in a shade of blush or rose gold, all meticulously hand-stitched and painstakingly tied with silken ribbon. Perfection, my dears, simply perfection. Now, these shoes, these incredible footwear creations, would take centre stage in 1939 and bring even more elegance to every pirouette.

This isn’t all about graceful ballet, darling, although, you know me, it always is at heart! Let’s hop to a totally different stage - Circus life! In the year of our time travel, the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus toured the USA with a whirlwind of daredevil acts and gravity-defying acrobatics, but here’s the fun bit – their daring trapeze artists weren't all wearing the heavy, bulky attire of yesteryear! Nope, leotards were entering the circus world with all the pizazz of a lion tamer's whip. Tight-fitting leotards in jewel-toned colours made an entrance – imagine ruby reds, shimmering sapphire blues – it was like the rainbow had hit the circus tent, leaving behind dazzling pops of colours that wowed audiences!

Oh my, even the sporty set caught on to the magic of the leotard in 1939. This era saw the introduction of more practical sportswear for women, with some sports starting to take notice of the incredible benefits of a well-fitting leotard. Tennis, gym classes, and the more daring women's sportswear, oh they were all embracing this sleek and elegant silhouette. Just think, darlings, from the grace of a ballerina to the daring leaps of a trapeze artist, even gym and tennis were being transformed by this wonderful piece of garment. What a magnificent era for the leotard to be strutting its stuff!

Now, let’s pop into a little café for a bit of a chat about the other styles of 1939. Think of all the styles! Let’s take a quick detour into the world of swimsuits. In 1939, swimwear started to get more exciting – a whole new way of looking and feeling glamorous, but it still retained that simple, yet elegant flair of the era. Imagine a single piece swimsuit that was just slightly less conservative, perhaps, but still retaining that classically chic, elegant look, in luxurious materials like silk and satin, in sophisticated black or ivory – think Audrey Hepburn’s grace and femininity with just a little bit of extra elegance thrown in, if you know what I mean.

Speaking of elegance, I wouldn’t dream of letting a single day go by without a peek at lingerie – oh, I love a good dose of glamorous lace and silky slip! Think luxurious nightgowns, romantic lace, soft chiffons, it’s a blend of intimacy and glamour all rolled into one fabulous creation.

I've got to admit, 1939 – well, that was truly an era of feminine glamour! It wasn’t just the dresses, but those adorable little jackets with delicate details that had to have been all the rage back then – they added a little touch of sartorial magic, whether over a feminine outfit or even a sporty ensemble. Remember, fashion is a symphony of details, darlings!

You might wonder how I fund my wild time-traveling exploits? I mean, buying those time-traveling pink sparkly leotards don't come cheap, you know? Well, there’s a simple secret. It’s all about bringing the sparkle, grace, and joy of dance to the streets. I'm a ballerina in the modern world! My pink tutu isn’t just a fabulous fashion statement; it's my power source – my way to keep my time-travelling engine whirring and ready for more exciting adventures.

Remember, lovelies, a little bit of magic goes a long way – be that magic through a simple twirl in your favourite pink tutu, or finding your own secret, inner sparkle, whatever it may be. Until next time, may your leotard dreams always shine as brightly as the time-traveling stars!

Love, Emma
