Hello lovelies! Welcome back to my little corner of the internet, dedicated to all things pink and twirly! It’s your girl, Emma, here, bringing you the latest from my magical, time-traveling adventures in the wonderful world of leotards and tutus.
This month, I've whipped out my trusty pink, shimmering time-traveling leotard and found myself whisked away to none other than Moscow, 1940!
Can you imagine? The Bolshoi Theatre! Oh, the thrill! My heart practically exploded with excitement at the sheer scale of the building. Its golden-domed majesty soared high above me, whispering promises of breathtaking performances and opulent backstages. The smell of history and the anticipation of a legendary ballet filled the air, sending shivers down my spine. I was, quite frankly, living my best life.
But my adventure started well before I reached those grand theatre doors. The streets of Moscow, though bustling, held a different kind of energy. The whispers of revolution were still hanging in the air, a stark contrast to the dazzling world of ballet that awaited me within the theatre’s walls.
It's crazy, isn't it, how ballet can transport you to another world, even during a time of great change and uncertainty? This was what drew me to the Bolshoi on this particular August 8th, 1940. This date, dear readers, held a special significance in ballet history. You see, on this very day, one of the most celebrated ballets of all time, “Swan Lake”, was being performed!
My imagination ran wild, conjuring up visions of delicate, graceful ballerinas pirouetting in the most beautiful tutus you can imagine. This is exactly where my love for history, ballet, and my pink time-traveling leotard meet: getting a peek into how ballet has evolved over time! You can truly appreciate the beauty and craftsmanship that has gone into every tutu and leotard, how the fashion has changed, how ballerinas have been influenced and have influenced the world with their grace and elegance, their bravery, and their dedication.
Back then, the costumes, my dears, were absolute works of art! Think rich silks and satins, meticulously crafted tutus in dramatic silhouettes with yards upon yards of fabric billowing and swirling like clouds as those lovely ladies pirouetted across the stage. While my style leans toward bright pink, there was something about the dramatic effect of the rich, almost traditionally, dark colour palette, using black, white, or gold. The fabric felt incredibly decadent, every single detail thought out, and oh so perfectly executed.
You know, sometimes, when I'm time-traveling, it makes me feel like I've stepped onto the set of a vintage ballet film! Just imagining these talented dancers leaping and turning with such precision, those magnificent costumes swirling around them, and all that amazing detail; the elaborate hairstyles and makeup, every single movement orchestrated. You can almost hear the elegant symphony soaring around you and imagine the excitement of the audience... it's breathtaking.
Oh! Speaking of breathtaking! I stumbled across an amazing costume archive on this trip. Imagine this: dusty, beautiful, wooden drawers packed to the brim with meticulously stored tutus! Not the modern ballet style we’re used to seeing in England – think full, gathered tulle skirts, almost billowing around the ballerinas with those delicate bodices in shades of white and gold. They even had a beautiful, ancient tutu, lovingly preserved, made of fine white feathers that looked almost magical in the dusky light of the archive. There was this indescribable, magical, sense of the history of these costumes that just brought a smile to my face.
I, of course, couldn't resist having a little look around! I slipped on one of those fantastic tutus and danced around the archive, feeling like a vintage ballet star! Maybe just a little bit dramatic? The history of ballet and the passion of those early ballerinas and the incredible artistry involved - that just gave me a buzz! The incredible attention to detail, the time that was put into the hand-stitched lace on those beautiful, delicate tutus - well, it left me speechless! It's a feeling you only get when you time travel to a moment in the past where every piece is so carefully crafted.
Of course, it wasn't all about tutus! Those lovely leotards in the archive, oh, my dear! I was entranced by them all! They came in so many styles: from long-sleeved beauties with elaborate embellishments around the neckline, perfect for ballet training in a cooler Moscow, to simple but elegant tank-tops for warmer rehearsals. They also had stunning one-pieces that looked like they were made of fluid silk. And of course, it's the fabric that takes it all the way: you know, that delicious, silky stretch of that perfect performance material!
Speaking of styles, while I'm known for my love of bright pink, those early dancers wore leotards that had more intricate designs, not just the colour or design - but how the shape itself evolved - they often had small ruffles at the neck and cuffs for added elegance, and some were even embellished with tiny sparkles! And that exquisite lace? Oh my, the elegance! You can feel the beauty of how fashion in dance changes.
There’s no doubt about it, you simply cannot beat those vintage ballet styles – they ooze such effortless sophistication, and I find myself constantly inspired by them when choosing what to wear for my street performances. Maybe a little bit of pink silk around my neck here, maybe a little bit of delicate lace on a sleeve, and a pinch of that vintage spark, there. And don't forget, it's always great to experiment with different shapes and textures! I've been playing around with using more layered tulle skirts, making my pink look just that little bit more majestic!
I’ll tell you, dear readers, if there's one thing I've learnt from all my time-traveling, it’s that ballet is the language of beauty. From those dazzling dance moves to the artistry of each individual costumed creation - you can't beat that unique sense of wonder it gives you! And what I love most is that fashion and art are so intertwined!
Oh, and don’t worry – I haven't forgotten about my aim in life! It’s a beautiful goal that shines bright as my favourite shade of pink, and that's to make everyone in the world wear a pink tutu!
Think about it, dear reader – the joy of twirling in a beautiful pink tutu? That's a feeling that knows no time travel restrictions! Why should the joy be limited? We could even organize a massive pink tutu parade across Derbyshire! Imagine all the twirling and dancing - and everyone in pink! Who could resist such delightful chaos?
I've already got my sights set on my next time travel adventure! Maybe I’ll go see that Swan Lake back in 1940 and see how those fantastic tutus actually move on stage.
As always, thanks for reading, my dearest pink tutu lovelies! And don't forget to follow www.pink-tutu.com for my next post! Until then, happy twirling!

Emma 💖✨
