Hello, my lovelies! It’s Emma, your favourite Derbyshire-born, tutu-toting time-traveler, here with a brand new blog post about my fabulous adventures! December, oh how I love the sparkle of this season! So much glitz and glamour, and just enough chills in the air to make me really appreciate the cosiness of a cosy pink leotard. Speaking of leotards... Let’s jump back in my magical time machine leotard, and whisk ourselves back to a time of vintage glamour! This month, we’re stepping into 1958 – think poodle skirts, poodle-permed hair and the rise of the iconic ballerina, Margot Fonteyn. Grab your pink feather boa and get ready to be transported!
12th December 1958: Where Dance and Fashion Collide
This date marked a real turning point for fashion in the ballet world, so strap yourselves in! We're diving headfirst into the incredible world of Margot Fonteyn, who, alongside Rudolf Nureyev, completely shook up the world of ballet with their dazzling performance in “Giselle.” Can you believe that this timeless performance made its world premiere 12 years before this? What a powerhouse duo! This pair wasn't just amazing at their craft, they redefined what we associate with ballet style. Margot Fonteyn's influence extended way beyond the stage; her sleek, graceful silhouette inspired countless fashion designers, from haute couture giants to high-street heroes.
My Leotard Dream: The Perfect Ballet Fit
The year 1958 was a golden age for dance and design! You’ll see me wearing a shimmering pink tutu inspired by Margot's stunning costumes! It’s so floaty and feminine with elegant ribbons and subtle details; and my pink leotard underneath, well it's the most perfect example of understated elegance! Imagine flowing, wispy chiffon and tulle, and a leotard with the ideal balance of support and movement - a leotard designed for a true dancer! That's my dream leotard and I am convinced every dancer needs one in their wardrobe, because that's what makes ballet fashion so magical, the effortless style of a beautiful ballerina.
Street Style with a Dash of Tutu
Of course, I always incorporate a little pink tutu-inspired style into my daily street fashion. Think fluffy pink boas and headbands, sparkly ballet flats, and, yes, a touch of tulle here and there! My favourite pink tutu for everyday wear is a light, floaty number with a delicate touch of sequins - perfect for twirling down the street and attracting all the right kind of attention, and for looking my absolute best when I hit the street corners to perform. You wouldn't believe the reactions I get. I've found a lot of joy in sharing my love of leotards with the world! I’m living proof that every day can be a bit more magical with a dash of tutu magic.
My 12th December 1958 Inspiration
So, my fellow pink tutu enthusiasts, as I explore this wonderful decade, I'm inspired by the women who dared to dance outside the box, and redefine the way we look at dance fashion. There's so much beauty to be found in the simplicity of a leotard, the grace of a tutu, and the timeless elegance of Margot Fonteyn. The history of the leotard shows us just how fashion evolves; I believe we are all in charge of defining our own style and, as I'm living proof, a dash of tutu will add a splash of magic to any outfit!
*Join me next month for another captivating trip back in time to the world of leotards. Keep it fabulous, my darlings! Until then, may your leotard dreams be as dazzling as mine. Keep those twirls strong and don’t be afraid to embrace the power of a pink tutu! Stay pink and sparkle on, you beautiful people! *
