We'll start our journey at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. Now, ballet history buffs know that 1959 was the year of the Bolshoi Ballet's 150th Anniversary Tour. It was a huge deal! And I'm lucky enough to be backstage, peeking behind the velvet curtain and feeling the buzz of excitement in the air. Let me tell you, the leotards they wear! Simply breathtaking.
We're talking deep, rich burgundy velvet and jewel-toned silks that shimmer under the stage lights. Every ballerina seems to embody the spirit of old Hollywood glamour in their elegant, sweeping lines. Imagine this: floor-length, flowy tutus, soft, delicate camisoles, and elegant ballet slippers, each detail carefully considered, and you get an idea of the sophistication they emanate.
On Stage in Broadway's Bright Lights:
Now we're on a supersonic pink twinkle to the legendary Broadway. 1959 was a year bursting with musical magic! I just love a good Broadway show. Imagine the bright lights of Times Square reflecting off the stage costumes.
Now, on the topic of leotards… there was a very special show going on in 1959. A dazzling musical, “Gigi”. Did you know the costumes for Gigi, a gorgeous young girl with a love for fashion, are all based on that era's iconic Dior and Balenciaga styles? Talk about high fashion ballet!

I found myself wandering past boutique windows filled with a stunning selection of leotards. We’re talking silks, velvets, chiffons, and delicate cotton. You could choose from a variety of colours – a whole rainbow of options – and leotards with embellishments, even a dash of sequins, all beautifully crafted to be a timeless statement. It was a ballet fashion lover’s dream come true!
A Fashion Fusion in the French Riviera:
Finally, I hopped on a whimsical, pink-tinted jet (not a real one, I'm a time traveller after all!) and arrived at the picturesque French Riviera to bask in the glitz and glam of this luxurious location. The Mediterranean sun, the shimmering blue waters, and a truly enchanting* array of styles!
I just had to witness "Le Ballet de l'Opéra de Paris" which, believe it or not, performed there that year. The leotard trend? Think Parisian sophistication combined with the playful energy of the French Riviera. Lacy details, delicate embroideries, soft, pastel-toned chiffons, and even a dash of je ne sais quoi, making every step graceful and stylish.
