Pink Tutu Travels: February 2nd 1965! 🩰💖

Hello lovelies!

Welcome back to Pink Tutu Travels, where we embark on magical adventures through time, all in the name of fabulous leotards! Today, we're whipping out our time-travelling pink sparkly leotard and jetting back to the groovy year of 1965 - a time when the world was buzzing with mod fashion, vibrant colours, and exciting dance styles! This is post number 1274 for Pink Tutu Travels, and I’m delighted to be sharing this month's journey with you!

As you know, my mission is to inspire everyone to embrace the joy of the pink tutu. From Derbyshire to the distant reaches of time, I’m determined to get the whole world twirling in pink!

You’ve got to love the hustle, don't you? We all need to chase our dreams, and for me, that’s about making a statement. Every month I head off on another amazing time travel adventure, and I fund it all with my street performances! I just adore bringing a bit of magic to people's days, and seeing them smile. I know some people are surprised to see a ballerina just dancing in the streets! But that’s what I love. Making people think and be more adventurous, and it all helps pay for these amazing time travel trips!

This time I landed in the heart of New York City on February 2nd, 1965. My oh my, was the city buzzing! The music was groovy, the style was wild, and the dance scene was electric. There were so many exciting shows happening in New York at the time, and my heart was thumping to the rhythm of the city. Can you believe I even spotted Baryshnikov dancing in one show?! The man is a legend, and to see him perform live - it was truly unforgettable!

What was hot in leotard fashion in 1965?

You wouldn't believe how much the world of leotard fashion was changing in the mid-60s. We had our eye-catching dancewear! Oh, and imagine the joy! We have a brand new, fantastic nylon dancewear invention: Lycra! Imagine how exciting it was to see Lycra come out into the world of dance! That material revolutionized everything. You’d find vibrant colors, geometric patterns and exciting shapes galore. I even spied some beautiful ballerina outfits with swirling patterns, creating a sort of 3D effect! These were daring and stylish leotards, with dramatic designs for a very unique look!

What was even more thrilling for me is seeing all these iconic fashion trends being adopted by dancewear. Take for example, the iconic 'mini-skirt' trend! It found its way to the stage, where it was often teamed with sleek and vibrant leotards, creating a bold and edgy look. I saw many talented dancers flaunting these dazzling combos, and oh my gosh, it was a pure celebration of feminine energy!

Think bold, playful patterns, and an abundance of colors! Let me tell you, the 1960s dancewear was a celebration of vibrancy! From a cool-looking pale blue leotard that would look perfect on a dancer for a beautiful modern piece to an eye-catching bright pink leotard that would be amazing for ballet. These colours really stole the show. They made dance feel electric and energised. The look was bold and brave, perfect for that carefree spirit of the time! I had a truly wonderful time shopping and watching shows all day!

Dance styles that captured my attention

While on my journey, I took time to immerse myself in the dance world. I found myself mesmerized by the emergence of some fabulous styles, especially the captivating Modern Dance. This incredible dance style explores contemporary movements, and often sees choreographers challenging conventional balletic rules, allowing for emotional expressiveness and experimental movements! It was beautiful, emotive, and truly breathtaking!

And you know I love ballet! As much as I am a pink tutu devotee, there's a time for all forms of dancing! And believe me, it was truly something else! And I fell in love with it’s theatrical nature, its intricate footwork, and the elegant grace of every movement. The iconic Swan Lake had just premiered and was taking New York City by storm, wowing the crowds. The choreography, the costumes, and the drama... all spectacular. The iconic Tchaikovsky music truly elevated it all.

I was truly amazed at how the 1960s embraced dance in such a dynamic and passionate way. It wasn't just ballet or modern dance that was drawing huge crowds; I had the privilege of seeing jazz dancing reach its peak with choreographers like Bob Fosse. The dancers, dressed in stunning costumes and executing their bold and fluid moves with a captivating energy, had me completely mesmerized. What incredible dancing, wow! I am so glad I travelled back to see such beautiful dancing and all those eye-catching leotards.

I'll always remember that day, a truly magical trip back through time! The spirit of 1965 is still with me! If I have learned one thing during my travels through time it is that, dance is something that connects us, unites us and makes us truly feel alive. That's what keeps me going.
