#LeotardHistory during 1965 12 December

Post 1284: Twirling Through Time – December 12th, 1965

Hello darling dears, and welcome to another month's edition of Pink-Tutu! Can you believe it's December already? Christmas is just around the corner, and with it, a plethora of opportunities to showcase my favourite attire – the pink tutu, naturally!

This month, my time-travelling leotard (it’s a sparkly pink, of course!) took me all the way back to the glorious 1960s, landing me in a very exciting December on the 12th. Now, let me tell you, the world of leotard fashion was totally different back then. Gone were the modern, sporty looks, and in their place was a sophisticated grace. Imagine the most exquisite dance costumes with delicate, feminine detailing. Sigh

The year 1965 was a golden era for dance and ballet. In fact, my travels took me straight to the London Palladium for an absolutely divine performance of "Hello Dolly!" Now, whilst the show itself wasn't specifically a dance performance, oh, how the costume designs made my heart flutter!

There was this one ensemble – a shimmering, cerulean-blue gown with a huge, feathered fan. It just screamed ‘theatre’ and oozed the glamour of the era! My little ballet heart was completely smitten.

The musical, starring the ever-so-fabulous, the legendary, the one and only, Barbra Streisand! Talk about icon status! Seeing her grace the stage, shimmering in that gown – the sheer power!

And talking about legendary, remember Rudolf Nureyev? He had the ballet world abuzz back then, and oh, those ballets – just perfect. There was a palpable, electric energy in the air. The elegance, the storytelling in each pirouette, each extension…it was magical.

And as for me, of course I was in my best pink tutu! It goes without saying. I blended right into the audience with the ladies in their equally stylish frocks, with those wonderful, full skirts and floral prints – I’ve got to tell you, they make me yearn for that era. The colours, the fabric, ah!

But it's not all just glamorous frocks and grand productions. 1965 saw a shift towards more athletic dance wear. Even back then, there was a growing need for clothes that allowed for full range of movement. Think leotards made with stretchy, innovative fabrics - nylon, lycra – they were beginning to revolutionize dance fashion! And guess what? The pink trend was catching on, with several companies beginning to introduce these bolder colours in their range. Imagine a world where bright pink leotards, paired with a tutu of a complementary shade, that is a dream come true.

Speaking of dreams… the dancewear I've seen on my travels has made me even more determined to make everyone embrace their inner ballerina. Every single person should own a pink tutu! I truly believe that life is more fun with a bit of sparkle. And with that, I must be off! I've got some street performances to plan. Perhaps a pink-themed choreography to really make the crowd remember this incredible day.

Stay sparkly, darling dears, and don't forget to visit Pink-Tutu again next month. Who knows where my sparkly pink leotard will take me next?

Emma xoxo
