Helloooo, darlings! Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood pink tutu enthusiast and time-travelling ballerina extraordinaire! It's March 3rd, and this month I've got my time-travelling sequins set on a trip back to 1968! Why 1968? Well, it's the year that brought us a kaleidoscope of colour and a whole heap of fabulous fashion!
So, I popped on my dazzling pink time-travelling leotard - you know the one, with all the sparkly gems - and whoosh! Back I went, landed smack-bang in the middle of swinging sixties London! Honestly, this city is bursting at the seams with leotard inspiration. Just imagine: geometric patterns, vivid hues, and textures galore!
Now, for today's #LeotardHistory adventure, I wanted to capture the true spirit of this dynamic decade, so I opted for a chic little black leotard - it’s a timeless classic for a reason, ladies! - topped with a vibrant pink tutu. I know what you're thinking, darling, it's bold! But I’m always up for a good fashion challenge! The bright pink tutu really pops against the sleek black leotard, like a touch of sunshine on a crisp winter’s day.
The first stop on my itinerary was a performance at the Royal Ballet! I simply couldn’t resist the opportunity to see Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn dance. It was just absolutely stunning! Margot looked effortlessly beautiful in a traditional tutu with soft layers, the kind that’s light as a feather, just like her moves.
Next, it was on to Covent Garden! What a fabulous marketplace! You know, I even managed to grab myself a few little goodies - a darling silk scarf and a pair of fantastic patterned tights – all in glorious pink, of course!
Let me tell you, the streets are alive with this electrifying energy – everything from fashion to music, it's all about embracing bold and dramatic! Now, talking about leotard fashion, a peek into the world of 1968 leotards:
- The Bodysuit: Think sleek and versatile. Think Jane Fonda! They were all the rage, often paired with hot pants or even flowing maxi skirts, just begging for some cool dance moves!
- The Turtleneck: It was a must-have back then, and guess what? It’s still absolutely gorgeous today! I must say, I spotted an exquisite emerald-green one on display that would pair perfectly with my hot pink tutu.
- Colour Play: Think sunshine yellows, vibrant oranges, turquoise blues. They were making a statement everywhere! If you ever find yourself craving a bit of colour inspiration, just pop over to 1968!
- The Lycra Look: This material was a total game-changer. Remember all those awesome stretch pants from the disco era? They were born out of this decade’s desire for a more functional, but fashion-forward leotard, and it was fantastic.
- Embroidered Delights: Leotards with pretty embroidery, oh my! These were a perfect choice for ballet and rhythmic gymnasts who wanted to add some sparkle and character to their routines!
It’s quite fascinating, this whole leotard evolution thing. Back then, a leotard was simply seen as practical gym wear. But it’s moved far beyond those days. Leotards today? They are absolute style statements!
Now, as a treat for your lovely eyeballs, I’m posting a few photos of my London explorations, including pictures of some vintage 1968 leotard styles I managed to find at a rather fab second-hand boutique (they also had some beautiful floral-print tights! swoon).
Speaking of trends, before I dash off on my next time-travel adventure (don’t worry, I’ll be back next month!), let’s chat about my upcoming show – The Pink Tutu Express – where I'm taking on the stage, as always, with my pink tutu and my fabulous leotard creations, in none other than my very own home town: the heart of Derbyshire, England. I’m bursting with excitement about it, so please, do come and join me. Tickets are on sale now, you can get yours at www.pink-tutu.com!
I hope you’re all ready to dance and embrace the dazzling, colourful world of pink tutus! Until next month, stay fabulous and keep twirling!
Much Love,
Emma xoxo
