Every month, I slip into my magical pink sparkling time-traveling leotard, and we venture into the glorious history of the leotard - getting our dancing shoes and a little bit of shimmer into the heart of fashion! And this month, well, darlings, it's a real treat.
*(Let's just pause a moment for the sound of *all those sparkles, because we're about to go into the glorious 70s, and there's just so much leotard magic about to be uncovered! Pink Tutu readers know what I mean! )*
So! You know me, I love street performance and street fashion! I’m constantly gathering my dance troupe and taking to the cobbled streets to do what I love best: share our passion for dance! But how did 70s fashion influence leotard design? What was on the it list in 1972, and where does that incredible, pink-sparkly magical leotard of mine get it’s heritage? We're about to dive right in, darlings!

Let's rewind to a time when flares were in! A time when glamour was everywhere! The leotard had evolved into an integral part of not just athletic wear, but fashion as a whole, with incredible street-wear trends! 1972's fashion focused on expressing the individual through unique colours and textures and this spirit really got its groove on with the leotard, ooh darling!
1972 Leotard Fashion Trends You’ll Love!
Here’s what made 1972's leotards so sensational :
1. A Symphony of Colours:
- From bright pops of colour to sleek and sophisticated monochromes, the leotards were as dynamic and vibrant as the times themselves! We're talking everything from the gorgeous pastel pinks and purples to hot, bright oranges, blues and greens - just picture it, darlings! - and a vibrant embrace of everything sparkly. This is an era that loved it’s textures, darling, and that is reflected in every dazzling, metallic leotard. I, for one, am very much feeling the disco-fever-inducing gold and silver hues and shimmer. I simply can't get over those sparkles, darling! Sparkling and shiny is the word here and what could better exemplify this than the incredible introduction of metallic fabric and the dare I say it - even the adventurous use of holographic leotards! Oh my! Talk about fashion history in the making! The disco spirit, it is felt far and wide and we have it to thank for giving us fashion that can’t help but dance!

While solid colors dominated, a growing fascination with geometric prints like stripes and polka dots began making its mark. There is, of course, no exception when it comes to leotards and our time-travelling-tutu wearing fashionistas would definitely have found their hearts dancing! They're simple yet striking prints. And they totally suit our style. This is, as you know, a big year for everything sparkly and bold! So there are, naturally, so many more ways to play with prints than you could ever imagine and 1972 has given leotards such an incredibly versatile sense of design.

This was, my darlings, the dawn of a new era in leotard history, the dawn of everyday-leotard chic! I can almost see those fabulous 70s women taking their love of fashion out of the dance studio! They began wearing leotards with jeans and skirts. Here’s where my tutu-loving-fashion-heart really comes in. The Pink Tutu Time Travels team and I have decided we need to go back and capture the 1972 era. Where can we find them now? This year, we are travelling the world once again to the heart of leotard fashion, to try to unearth this incredible design!
This year, I know we’ll be dancing through vintage shops! The world needs a touch of the magical, and, dare I say it, sparkle and I’ll find it, along with my lovely ballet team to create an entirely new level of street dance glamour!
