Hello darlings, and welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com!
This month, my sparkly pink time-travelling leotard has whisked me away to a very special date: September 9th, 1972. I just adore the 70s – it was a truly magical time for leotards! Think about it, my loves; disco was in full swing, and that meant flamboyant outfits, daring silhouettes, and of course, the most fabulous leotards imaginable!
Now, if you're wondering how I managed to snag this particular date for my time travels, well, let me tell you. My dearest, beautiful, and ever-so-slightly obsessed leotard-loving friend, Poppy, suggested it. Poppy's a bit of a leotard aficionado herself and swore that I had to visit September 9th, 1972. Apparently, there was a groundbreaking event in the world of leotards that simply had to be seen to be believed! I do love a good leotard mystery, so, off I went, swirling through the space-time continuum in my sparkly pink number, ready for an adventure!
And, let me tell you, it was an adventure, darlings! When I landed in my new temporal location, I immediately spotted the most magnificent display of leotards I had ever seen. Not in a shop, mind you, but at a rather splendid performance at the London Coliseum. This magnificent structure has been a mainstay of theatrical performance since the Victorian Era and is renowned for hosting the very best shows. The stage lights, the anticipation in the air, it was pure magic! I immediately took a seat, eager to experience the spectacle before me!
Now, remember those groundbreaking leotards Poppy was raving about? They were the creation of one Roland Petit, a legendary figure in the world of ballet. The performance was of Le Diable au Corps ("The Devil in the Flesh"). It wasn't just the dance that captivated the audience – oh no! It was the costume design. A vibrant, revolutionary ensemble by Roland Petit, designed for the divine Zizi Jeanmaire, his wife and muse. And that costume, darlings, was the pièce de résistance of the whole evening.
Zizi Jeanmaire – a captivating, beautiful ballerina, a true legend – wore a leotard of pure white with an intricate geometric pattern. The bold lines and angular shapes were simply exquisite. This, my loves, wasn't just your average ballet leotard; it was a fashion statement. The dramatic, sharp design contrasted magnificently with the ethereal softness of her movement, a thrilling visual feast that sent ripples through the theatre. It's no wonder everyone was buzzing about this dazzling leotard. The entire show was captivating; the performance itself, the atmosphere, and, of course, Zizi's absolutely exquisite leotard.
But that wasn't all, darlings! While Zizi Jeanmaire's leotard was undeniably the star of the show, I couldn't resist adding a dash of pink to my 1972 fashion spree. It's an absolute MUST when it comes to time-travelling in my trusty, sparkly pink time-travelling leotard. Thankfully, there were plenty of delightful little boutiques on London's streets, each one overflowing with fabulous fabrics, dazzling prints, and even a handful of gorgeous, retro pink leotards with a 70s vibe. I felt like I was walking through a leotard wonderland, my love of the colour pink completely satisfied!
The Shopping Experience in London in 1972
You know how much I adore a good vintage shopping spree, and, trust me, London was an absolute delight in 1972!
The boutiques I visited weren't the mass-market shops you find today, filled with chain brands. Each shop was uniquely individual, packed with handmade treasures, local designers, and an air of charm that's hard to find today. The salespeople were wonderfully attentive, offering helpful advice on the best leotards and offering tips for a stunning look! Imagine the thrill, the sheer excitement of picking up a leotard, admiring its cut and the way it flowed on my form. These little boutiques were like time capsules, holding secrets of fashion and craftsmanship from a simpler, yet utterly captivating time.
My pink time-traveling leotard might get me to my destination, but my passion for leotards, and fashion generally, gets me through my journeys! So many delightful colours and patterns! I felt a connection with the fashion of that era; a connection to my heritage and a shared love of expressing oneself through fashion! It’s about feeling empowered, it's about embracing your individuality, and of course, it's about looking incredible! I can assure you that there's no shortage of that on my time travels!
As for my performance outfits, I think I’ve been inspired. You just know that you’re going to see a dash of 1972’s fashion influence when I take to the street on my next performance.
