Hello darlings! Emma here, your time-travelling, pink-tutu-wearing, leotard-loving blogger! It’s the 11th November, and this month, I’ve taken my pink sparkling time-traveling leotard to the most fascinating time - 1976!
Oh, the memories! Imagine, no iPhones, just massive hairdos, flares, and… the most wonderful leotard styles! You know how much I adore vintage looks and finding new ways to modernise classic styles, and this trip was a sartorial dream!
Back to the Disco Days1976 was the height of disco fever, and everywhere I went, from the streets of New York to the dance floors of London, people were rocking that glitzy, glamorous look. This decade’s leotard was all about daring lines, bold colours and sparkle. Imagine a beautiful shade of cerulean blue, vibrant crimson, and, my absolute favourite, fiery orange - a burst of colour on the dance floor.
Leotards themselves were getting much bolder and more expressive - think flowing bell sleeves, leg warmers, and lots of intricate detailing. I must say, I spent most of my time drooling over the abundance of rhinestones, sequins and beaded trim - perfect for a disco queen!
And who better to inspire me than the legend, Donna Summer? Seeing her own rendition of the disco era’s bold style - I can’t tell you how much I was enthralled! Imagine a leotard of pure, metallic gold, paired with shimmering, sequinned hot pants - wow, what a statement piece!
The style of 1976 reminded me so much of a ballet stage. All the movement, the flow, the theatricality – and with such confidence in the expression of movement and the body.
But let’s get back to my favourite topic, the tutus! Well, 1976 certainly didn’t disappoint! There was so much experimentation going on, from the classic puffy tulle to innovative new designs that defied convention. It was quite an artistic journey through tutu time! I saw tutus fashioned from silk and shimmering satin, each layer billowing gracefully, with elegant movement, and then the next moment I was witnessing a futuristic tutu crafted from reflective material, each layer a flash of colour as it caught the light! It was truly breathtaking!
My latest favourite piece? A beautiful pastel-pink, one-layered tutu – just simple, delicate and perfect for a graceful arabesque. Oh, it looked so elegant on stage! Imagine, it floated effortlessly around the wearer, leaving an ethereal glow in its wake! And speaking of stages…
Catching a ShowNaturally, my time travelling couldn’t be complete without catching a ballet show! I stumbled upon an exquisite performance of Swan Lake in the magnificent Royal Opera House. Now, I’m not going to lie, I got to the performance just in the nick of time! It was almost impossible to get my pink leotard on with my trusty, time-traveling sparkly ballet bag packed - it always seemed to magically become a giant, glitzy handbag on these historical adventures, a handy disguise and just enough to hold my essentials, even my magical travel guide to time. It's never too far off. I feel completely confident it will get me to all the time travelling shenanigans I have in store, especially after catching that performance of Swan Lake, my absolute favourite ballet! Imagine a ballerina soaring through the air in her elegant, feathered white tutu, the air catching every layer as she danced the swan’s graceful movements. I truly feel I’ve found my purpose - sharing this wonderful fashion history with everyone, and even inspiring some fashion moments!
Street Fashion FunAfter that show, I took a trip to Soho, where London’s youth were truly expressing themselves! Here, I saw the incredible influence of street culture on leotard trends. It wasn’t about the full-fledged dancer's leotard; it was more about mixing and matching with other clothing. I spotted countless ladies wearing long-sleeved leotards paired with flares, ripped jeans or even just a pair of long, sheer leggings for a touch of both elegance and that disco-chic edge!
This definitely sparked some creative inspiration. I even saw this lovely lady wearing a classic pink leotard, a vintage biker jacket and her favourite pair of trainers - an unexpected, but utterly gorgeous contrast! I love how people were experimenting with colour combinations - fiery reds with greens, turquoise with coral, and even the bold black-and-white palette for those daring ladies. There's nothing quite like street fashion.
So, my dear blog followers, 1976 was all about breaking the norm. There was this vibrant sense of liberation in style - I think we should definitely embrace a little bit of that in our current fashions! Just like my tutu - there's no rule about how to wear it - the sky's the limit for this versatile piece. Remember, wear a pink tutu because you love it, because you’re bold and unique, because it gives you confidence - because you’re a disco queen in the making!
