As I arrived in 1980, the first thing that struck me was the vibrant energy in the air, just buzzing with a rebellious creativity! The streets of New York City, where I landed for this time-jump, were teeming with street performances, and you could see the influences of dance fashion seeping into every corner of daily life. Legwarmers were everywhere – think pink, bright blue, yellow stripes – paired with anything from miniskirts to leggings, and yes, even jeans!
The sheer creativity was incredible. Leotards were no longer just practical dancewear, but fashion statements in their own right. They were vibrant, bold, and dripping with glittery embellishments! It was like an entire rainbow burst open, each legwarmer was a tiny kaleidoscope, dazzling me with patterns and colour! They were a vision! I had to have them! Luckily for me, I had packed my travel budget purse with British Pounds and, even better, the shop owner was enchanted by my pink tutu! So, thanks to my pink tutu and the thrill of the 80s, I scored the legwarmers - and, as a little extra, a shimmering hot pink leotard with a dramatic neck – a classic 80s style, simply perfection.
