Leotard Fashion Time Travel - Post Number 1541: 5th May, 1987 - A Blast From the Past!

Hello darling,

Welcome back to my Leotard Fashion Time Travel blog, pink-tutu.com! It's your girl Emma, bringing you all the hottest news from the history of dance fashion, from tutus to leotards, to whatever delights those wonderful costume designers throw our way. This month I'm hopping in my sparkly time-traveling leotard, ready to take you on an adventure to… 5th May, 1987! Buckle up, because this time, we're diving straight into the world of leotards, tutus and all the other fabulous fashion of the glorious 80s!

Before I go, let me just say, I’m totally living my best life! I was strutting my stuff yesterday at a charity performance in my city centre. We did a whole “Moulin Rouge” number. Oh, the feather boas and sparkly thigh-high stockings… it was fabulous! You just can't beat that energy of performing for a live audience. Then there were so many generous people stopping to admire my fabulous outfit. One even commented, "Love that tutu, darling. Where can I get one?" See, that's my mission, spreading the love for all things pink, all things tutu. My passion, really, is making sure that pink is the most celebrated colour in the entire world.

Oh, I'm getting carried away… let's jump into this fascinating time travel!

So, you might think that May 5th, 1987 might just seem like an ordinary Thursday, but I'm telling you, in the world of leotard fashion, ordinary simply doesn't exist! Just think: 1987, the pinnacle of 80s style. Bold, vibrant colours, eye-catching silhouettes and an overall explosion of creativity! What an absolutely wild and fabulous era! And in this wild time, some key trends for leotards were... well... let's just say eye-catching!

One key trend in 1987? Let’s call it… "the power of pink" darling. It was everywhere, from vibrant fuchsia and magenta leotards on the dance stage to dazzling pink tutus captivating the crowds at ballet shows across the globe. Oh, those beautiful tutus…

Speaking of tutus, one particular dancer stood out to me - Sylvie Guillem, dancing with the Paris Opera Ballet. Now, Sylvie is a true icon - the quintessential ballerina of the 80s. And her tutus? Pure fashion heaven. Those soft layers, swirling with a luxurious sheen… oh, you wouldn’t catch me in anything less when time traveling! It was an absolute dream!

Now, you think my love for pink has gone over the top, right? Well, just wait till you hear about the leotards! In 1987, they were bold, daring, and oh-so-dramatic. Think tight-fitting silhouettes with a generous dose of vibrant colours, patterns, and geometric shapes. The more neon the better! And I’m all for that.

Think neon yellow leotards with a splash of hot pink, bright red leotards paired with a daring black geometric design - a kaleidoscope of colour on the stage. Honestly, 80s leotard fashion? The absolute best!

We've got to take a moment to mention those leg warmers! You’re talking fashion essentials here. Everything from silky-smooth and stretchy to patterned, or fluffy. They gave even the most simple leotards that touch of extra sass!

Remember Natalia Makarova in 1987? Such a darling, wasn't she? An absolutely fabulous ballerina, one of the great dance legends of all time! You can spot her all over YouTube. Her technique was perfect and those outfits!

Another reason why I was so excited to step back to 1987, is the amazing ballet “Swan Lake” at the Royal Opera House. It was the opening night of the London season. I loved seeing the grandeur of this classic performance.

And speaking of grand, don’t even get me started on the fashion! These weren’t just “any” tutus darling. The “white swan” costumes were exquisitely elegant - with soft chiffon and subtle tulle. But wait for this! When the Black Swan emerges, there's this spectacular black tulle tutu - almost impossible to look away!

It’s no wonder why the ballet has such a powerful effect on people. This is the kind of history I’m trying to bring back for people. Imagine if we could experience this in the street every single day! It's moments like this that make me believe that pink is the key to making the world a more stylish place, one pink tutu at a time!

And now I’m leaving you, with a whole heap of “80s chic” running through your mind. Do keep those dancing shoes dusted off!

Until next month, Your Time-Traveling Fashionista, Emma
