Hello, darling Leotard Lovers! Welcome back to my monthly fashion-filled jaunt through time! It’s Emma here, your resident pink tutu aficionado, ready to take you on another dazzling trip to the world of leotard history, sprinkled with a generous dollop of ballet fashion and a whole lot of pink sparkle.

This month, we're twirling back to September 9th, 1987, a date that will forever be etched in my heart as the day I discovered the sheer magic of ballet, and how it's intertwined with our history, from grand stages to vibrant streets!

But before we delve into this glorious timeline, let's have a little chat about the lovely garment that's the star of my blog: the leotard. It's so versatile, don't you think? It's the backbone of a dancer’s wardrobe, whether they’re gracing a royal ballet company or twirling through a bustling city centre. This fabulous piece is truly the quintessential fusion of fashion and functionality, a sleek symphony of form and flow!

This month’s time-travelling journey, as always, will be taking me there in my trusty pink sparkling time-travelling leotard! Honestly, it never fails to deliver on the wow-factor, making each time trip both stylish and whimsical.

Now, let's dive into September 9th, 1987, shall we?

A Trip Back to 1987 – Let’s Talk Leotards!

Stepping through the portal, I found myself transported to a world bursting with vibrant colour and the intoxicating buzz of excitement. This year, the ballet world was a symphony of bold and innovative fashion. Leotards had come a long way since their humble beginnings!

The 80s were truly an era of bold experimentation in the leotard scene. We saw neon colours blazing across the stage, bright jewel tones juxtaposed with bold patterns. Think geometric designs, swirling abstract prints, and even animal prints making a daring entrance into the dance world! But for me, a lover of classic elegance, nothing can compete with a beautifully simple, form-fitting, classic leotard crafted from exquisite fabrics!

Back in my beloved Derbyshire, England, where I live when not traversing time and space, the dance studios buzzed with anticipation for the upcoming Royal Ballet's “The Sleeping Beauty” at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden . It’s my ultimate go-to show when travelling through time; nothing beats a classic ballet for timeless elegance and captivating storytelling! I can't wait to immerse myself in the enchanting story of Princess Aurora, watch the dancers effortlessly navigate the stage, and observe the leotards they wear in the elegant variations - a symphony of silken whispers!

But it wasn’t just about high-profile stage shows!

1987 was the year of “Flash Mobs”, long before the term was even coined. Street dance and performance had its first major boom, as impromptu dance groups erupted in major city centres all across the world. Imagine vibrant, spontaneous dance performances on a bustling New York sidewalk, or the streets of London, punctuated by flashing neon signs, all the way down Oxford Street!

My heart soared at the sight of all this creativity and uninhibited energy! Leotards were an integral part of the street dance movement - it seemed that no matter the style or genre of dance, from hip hop to salsa, ballet to tap, the leotard held its own in this world, showcasing the grace, the athleticism and, let’s be honest, the stylish curves of a dancer’s body.

Speaking of stylish curves... it was 1987 when I noticed a new trend. Leotards started embracing bodycon. Fitted, curve-hugging styles were sweeping the stage and the streets! It was the year of a strong and powerful, womanly silhouette – a vision that’s close to my heart! It spoke to the confident, sassy woman I see within us all, emboldened and liberated to be the absolute best versions of ourselves.

But, no trip back in time would be complete without indulging in a spot of shopping.

The 1987 retail scene had begun embracing the bold, energetic fashion trends of the decade. Think colourful tights with shimmering metallic textures and geometric patterns paired with leg warmers in eye-popping colours! There were a multitude of leotard boutiques flourishing in major cities - each offering their unique brand of sleek styles and audacious prints, each perfectly embodying the spirit of this remarkable era.

The world was on the move. It was all about showcasing the beauty and power of the female figure in the most exhilarating and dazzling way. Leotards were at the centre of this whirlwind of change! It's a vision I can get truly behind!

Let’s Talk Tutu’s!

What’s a trip to 1987 without embracing the grandeur of the tutu? Oh, the tutu - that incredible, poofy, ethereal cloud of a garment - I find myself perpetually captivated by its allure, a dream spun from tulle!

From the dramatic, billowing tutus of a traditional ballet to the shorter, whimsical “fairy” tutu styles of modern productions - each iteration is a magical creation. The tutu remains one of my favourite items to collect as it continues to enchant the dance world with its airy and glamorous allure!

On this particular trip back in time, I made a stop at a bustling New York street-performance venue and fell in love with the 'street tutu'! These mini-tutus - more delicate and streamlined versions of the classic – are perfect for the urban landscape.

These modern twists on the traditional tutu embraced the vibrancy and individuality of street dance, a trend I embraced instantly! The beauty of a tutu doesn’t just reside in a grand opera house! It belongs to every heart, every dance floor, every story that wants to tell itself. I simply adore that fact!

Final Thoughts…

As I return to my present, heart full and inspiration overflowing, I’m reminded that every year has its unique, magnificent contributions to the world of leotards and dance fashion. Whether it’s the sleek elegance of classical ballet, the gritty and creative street dance explosion or the vibrant explosion of colours from fashion shows – dance keeps reminding me of the endless, evolving energy of fashion.

Let’s celebrate the elegance, the vibrancy, the powerful presence and the artistic freedom the leotard and the tutu embody!
