It's Emma here, your favourite pink tutu-clad time-travelling fashionista! This month, I'm taking you on a whirlwind trip back to 1992, 7th July! My sparkling pink time travel leotard is positively humming with excitement. Are you ready for this?
I love the energy of the 90s! A time of iconic grunge looks, boy bands, and the glorious rise of the leotard. Now, this isn't a mere throw-back fashion moment - it's a chance to see what trends shaped the world of leotards today!
London Calling! A Leotard Odyssey
After hopping into my magical time-travel leotard (it shimmers more in this era, the time ripples just ever so slightly) and leaving my Derbyshire home for a brief visit, I arrive in bustling London!
Oh, the city hums with energy! I immediately feel inspired by the street fashion, full of bright colours, bold prints and a carefree spirit. Of course, my first stop has to be a dance shop! This place is a treasure trove of beautiful leotards - think mesh panels, jewel tones, and everything sparkly! They even have those chic wrap-over tops, a definite must-have for a ballet dancer’s street style, and so perfect for a pink tutu! The London dancers wear their leotards proudly, not just for the class but also out on the streets. It's just fantastic!
I also catch a performance at the Sadler's Wells Theatre – imagine my delight, there's a vibrant ballet featuring beautiful tutus. The dancers’ leotards have elegant lines, beautiful colours, and they're just oh so effortlessly graceful. I just love watching them dance – and even jot down some fabulous leotard design inspiration, because you know I love finding that unique, beautiful and personal fit.
Back to the Future…with a Pink Tutu!
While in 1992, I just have to pay homage to some major style inspirations. It's all about the glorious rise of the iconic ‘The Bodyguard' film starring the divine Whitney Houston and the effortlessly cool Kevin Costner. Her sleek style is perfection, with her figure hugging outfits and that stunning vocal range! She inspired an entire generation of women to be both powerful and feminine, and that was truly felt in leotard fashion with beautiful lines and vibrant colour. And then of course we have that beautiful 90s dance pop vibe that had so much impact! Everything is so sleek, so cool and very flattering!
Let’s talk music! From the dance moves of a young Janet Jackson (how amazing are her leotards!) to the soulful stylings of Mariah Carey, these singers knew that leotards are the perfect way to channel powerful femininity, and to move beautifully on stage, too. Even a new girl group called Spice Girls is making waves with their flamboyant fashion, especially in those fabulous dance routines – watch out for them, they're only just getting started!
And of course, as a tutu aficionado, I can't ignore the beautiful world of the ballet. Ballet in the 90s saw such a huge growth. This time I travel in my sparkly time-travelling leotard has definitely convinced me that leotard history is all about creativity and expression, especially in ballet!

Sport Luxe: The leotard has really moved beyond the world of ballet and has embraced street fashion. Think breathable fabrics, neon colour and an overall sleek aesthetic - perfect for those who want to look athletic and fashion-forward, like I do in my street ballet performances.
Minimalism and Softness: Some modern leotards are sleek, simple, and oh so comfortable, in beautiful fabrics, featuring lovely low cuts - an embodiment of both elegant practicality and beautiful grace.
Ballet's Influence: Leotard history really is all about its evolution in ballet fashion. So, I see that the classic lines of a ballet leotard continue to inspire new trends, featuring delicate mesh panels and elegant straps – there's nothing more graceful than a ballerina!
Tutu, Tutu, Tutu! Of course I love the gorgeous evolution of the tutu in dance fashion, with new designs appearing, each unique and stunningly elegant. And we’ve all noticed the impact on fashion; the tutu has stepped outside of the dance studios and really come into its own. And now I see the pink tutu being embraced by a huge range of women. Maybe I am making my little dream a reality, just a bit!
More Than a Leotard: Fashion for Freedom and Confidence
Remember, my fellow pink tutu lovers, a leotard is more than just an item of clothing, it’s a symbol. It's about comfort, confidence, and a whole lot of creative fun!
