Hello lovelies, and welcome back to another month of time travel adventures with your favourite pink tutu-wearing, ballet-obsessed blogger, Emma! Today, weâre twirling back to the glorious 1994, a year that saw a surge of vibrant colours and styles that we can still marvel at today. Letâs step back in time and see what our fashionable ancestors were wearing!
The air hums with a sweet scent of jasmine and summery freedom, and as I sparkle through the streets of 1994 London in my very own magical pink, time-traveling leotard, I'm reminded of the enduring appeal of a well-placed glitter! Remember the iconic "Clueless" movie, darling? Itâs like stepping right out of a scene from that, with its sunshine yellow hues and an effervescent style that makes you want to throw a massive 90s-themed party, immediately!
Today, my street ballet performance was extra sparkly! It was so much fun to watch the expressions of those walking by as my leaps and turns in my shimmering leotard momentarily stopped their day, and you could see that they wanted to join in the fun, maybe even try to do the splits right then and there! It's that contagious spirit that makes ballet, and even street ballet performances, such a joy, isnât it? The beautiful flow, the elegance, the sheer, delightful silliness of it all. It's about finding the magic in everyday life and embracing the expressive joy of movement!
Right after, I popped into a quaint little boutique â think cobblestones and vintage lampposts - for some fashion inspiration and a good cuppa! Imagine my surprise to find a darling little leotard shop, brimming with 90s vibes, where the proprietor was in her element talking about "neon-coloured spandex" and "high-cut leg lines."
This place was a wonderland, with racks filled with all manner of leotards in colours and fabrics we barely even see nowadays! There were bold reds, zesty oranges, vibrant greens, all in a tapestry of lycra and cotton that felt almost nostalgic, like stepping back in time. Imagine - no mesh or sheer fabrics yet! Now that's an idea for another time-traveling trip, I reckon!
I picked out a fantastic cerulean blue leotard with a whimsical rainbow swirl design. It's perfect for a dramatic street performance, especially for a rainy day like today! Think âDirty Dancingâ in London's iconic Regent's Park â itâs the perfect place to capture those vintage 90s feels! Speaking of Dirty Dancing, do you know the leotard Baby wears? Such a classic! So much drama, such bold colour! Just thinking about it inspires me to find that leotard and give it the Emma spin!
Oh, speaking of inspiring, donât you love the sheer diversity of styles that leotard design gives us, from the ultra-simple to the fantastical? Itâs the same with tutus! Remember the âBlack Swanâ movie, lovelies? Oh, I just canât resist that black swan look! And letâs not forget all those other tutus - white, pastel pink, sunshine yellow â all are classics of the leotard and tutu world! Imagine how amazing they all must look together!
But wait! Today wasn't only about fashion; today was a chance to catch the opening night of a brand new ballet company here in London. Now, they weren't just any ballet company; they were âLondon Dance Revolutionâ â a truly modern take on the classic with an all-new production that showcased contemporary ballet with, hold your breath, âdigital projectionsâ!! And letâs be honest, 90s digital projection was about as far removed from our modern, 21st-century screens as you can imagine! But oh, was it fantastically innovative and exhilarating! Imagine those neon-coloured costumes and the vibrant projection graphics â it felt like being inside a giant light show and a powerful narrative all at once!
The show itself was amazing! Think a blend of cutting-edge movements with those classical dance steps. The finale, oh my, it featured all of the dancers, both male and female, with a truly incredible light display, a bit like being inside an aurora borealis. It really was quite spectacular.
After the show, I indulged in some delightful 90s street food! Did you ever get those deep-fried dough balls with gooey chocolate inside, drenched in sugar syrup, which was always my favourite? Then of course, a double scoop of ice-cream. Ah, the joy of simple treats and a touch of indulgence, like a sprinkle of pink sugar crystals, on an already sweet life. It really was the perfect ending to a perfect day.
Well lovelies, thatâs all for this month! Be sure to hop back for my next adventure. I've got my sights set on the late 70s, a period that brings to mind bell-bottoms, sequins and everything disco! Canât wait to show you my finds and relive those iconic fashion moments. And of course, my biggest dream is to see every person on this earth embrace the magic of the pink tutu! Maybe even join my time travels through the wondrous history of leotards. I'd love to see you all in pink!
Until then, keep on dancing, lovelies, and donât forget to keep those pink tutus twirling!
With love and a dash of sparkle,
Emma xx
