Hello darlings! It's your favourite pink tutu wearing time traveller, Emma, here. You know how much I love tutus, but did you know my fascination with ballet and leotard history goes back, well, way back? Like, 1800s back!
This month's time travel took me right into the heart of 1994 - can you believe it's been nearly thirty years since this iconic year? β and what a time to be alive for leotard fashion, honestly! It was the era of the '90s dance revival, and I was simply besotted with the bold, vibrant colour palette and the return of traditional tutu silhouettes.
Of course, my time travelling leotard (this month it was a sparkling pink with iridescent sequins β oh my, it was divine!) made me feel right at home, especially when I popped into the New York City Ballet at Lincoln Center!
They were performing Jerome Robbins' whimsical ballet, "The Four Seasons," a vibrant celebration of life and, guess what, it was infused with so much pink, I felt I could have practically lived there!
After my ballet trip, it was off to the Metropolitan Opera, another icon of this glamorous time, to see their production of Mozart's "The Magic Flute." My eyes nearly popped out when I saw the breathtaking costumes; it was like a fantastical fairyland!
What did I pick up in 1994, you ask? Well, aside from inspiration for a new street performance (who needs an iPhone when you've got a glittery pink tutu to attract a crowd?!), I managed to snag myself a truly extraordinary antique β a Victorian tutu! Imagine my delight β this fluffy little confection was a relic from an era when ballet tutus were almost nonexistent!
I'm picturing a vision in shimmering pink and tulle, paired with a blush-pink leotard (a style I snagged in London from a vintage shop in Covent Garden!), swirling in front of Buckingham Palace.
I know, I know, you're dying to hear all the details about this majestic discovery, and Iβm just bursting to spill the beans!
The Victorian Tutu - A Love Affair From Another EraSo, the story goes like this: in my whirlwind of time travelling, I popped into a vintage store in New York, just a stone's throw from Central Park. There it was, hidden amongst an array of hats, boas, and feather fans β a dusty, forgotten treasure chest of a Victorian era tutu.
The delicate, cream-colored silk tulle, finely embroidered with tiny pearl-like sequins, was still as captivating as if it had been worn only yesterday. It whispered tales of Victorian ballrooms, of the ladies waltzing and pirouetting under sparkling chandeliers. The craftsmanship was simply breathtaking.
It had a subtle pink hue to it and I just had to have it, darling!
To this day, this little gem sits proudly in my time-travel collection (you wouldnβt believe some of the things Iβve collected over the years!), a reminder of my exciting journey and the artistry of fashion throughout the ages.
The Pink Tutu Takes Flight In the 90sSo, what else was I wearing in 1994? Well, I made sure my leotard game was strong.
Remember the 90s? Think oversized leotards paired with bright tights! My trip took me right into the world of BodyWear (think of them as the ultimate bodywear champions!) which became synonymous with iconic silhouettes β remember those sporty, minimalist yet chic leotards they produced, so perfect for barre work or contemporary dance?
Letβs talk colours, because the β90s were all about bold, bright, and sometimes outrageous choices. So, I went wild with colours, you could say my outfits were a full rainbow at times β I had a vibrant emerald green leotard I wore in NYC, that contrasted perfectly with my sparkly pink tutu!
As well as the body-skimming body-wear leotard, this era saw the 'ballet' leotard come back in a big way. Think ballet-style straps, fitted bodices β very Audrey Hepburn, darling β and soft, flowing tulle skirts!
So many dancers embraced this classic look for recitals and performances. It was a moment where the power of leotards to be both artistic and expressive really shined through.
My favourite 90s looks include the signature Mary Jane shoes, knee-high socks, and hair-bows. There was just something effortlessly cool and yet playful about the entire aesthetic!
You can see just how iconic and influential this period of time was by how much it's resurfaced in modern-day fashion, making appearances in designers like Gucci, Marc Jacobs, and Dolce & Gabbana.
But for me, the true allure of leotard fashion is the feeling of liberation it evokes. Whether I'm strutting the streets of 1994 or whipping up a dance routine in the 21st century, the magic of a pink tutu always has the power to turn heads, spark joy, and make me feel truly, absolutely unstoppable!
I mean, seriously, how can you not be inspired by the pure power of a pink tutu?!
