Post 1657: Time Travelling to 1997 - Leotards of the 90s

Hello my lovely little tutus!

Welcome back to my blog, Pink-Tutu. I’m Emma, a ballet-obsessed fashionista, time travelling from Derbyshire, England! As usual, I’ve packed my favourite pink sparkly leotard (it does wonders for the time travel) and my trusty tutu, and I'm off on another fabulous trip back through the ages.

This month, we're heading all the way back to January 1997. Get your fingerless gloves and your chokers ready - the nineties are calling!

As a proud ballerina with a passion for pink tutus and a suitcase bursting with leotards of every style, my obsession with dance fashion isn't just a passing fancy – it’s a way of life! I believe there's something truly special about the beauty and elegance of a leotard and a tutu, and I'm dedicated to spreading this passion far and wide. I hope to encourage every woman and every girl to embrace their inner dancer and twirl with confidence!

And how do I finance my time-travelling adventures? Well, as much as I love dancing in grand ballrooms, the best way to make a few quid is with a little street ballet. Imagine: performing under the bright lights of Piccadilly Circus, in the heart of London, the air filled with music, a hundred sets of eyes glued to my pink tutu and me! People love to see the sparkle, and they are happy to donate - enough to make my travel expenses worthwhile.

So, imagine the scene - a sunny afternoon in January 1997, in Derbyshire. I step into my sparkling leotard - and suddenly, I'm whisked back in time, landing in a cloud of glittering dust and the unmistakable smell of teenage rebellion.

Leotard Trends of 1997

Okay, 1997. I must say, the leotard styles of this era are a real mixed bag.

  1. The Full Body Unitard: A flashback to the 80s. We saw a lot of these - full-body unitards, usually in vibrant colours. This was the golden age of neon - bright yellow, pink, orange - you name it. Even a little leopard print in a leotard wouldn’t have raised an eyebrow. And while it's great to see this leotard shape back on the catwalks in recent seasons, they're definitely easier to pull off when you’ve got the figure and the confidence of a supermodel!
  2. The ‘Funky’ Leotard: Then there were leotards with strange designs. Ribbons, swirls, even feathers - some were bold, some were outrageous, all with that distinctive “more is more” 90s flavour! The cut-outs! I have a beautiful midnight blue leotard with strategically placed cut outs for a modern take on the classic design. Perfect with some sparkly leggings and an oversized hoodie!
  3. The “Keep It Simple” Leotard: I found a fantastic pair of simple black leotards in a small independent shop near a school of dance - basic but stylish, great for beginners, good quality too!
  4. The All-Rounder: And remember, it’s not just leotards, let's talk leggings, too. A mix of colour combinations - black and pink, pink and white - they are like the all-rounders in your workout kit. They matched every top, from cropped tees to sweatshirts, just perfectly!

A Day of Leotard Fun

So, what is there to do in 1997?

This morning, I joined a youth ballet workshop - such lovely young dancers! It's great to see a real love for the arts flourishing, and of course, everyone looked amazing in their leotards. Then, this afternoon I'm off to a theatre performance of 'West Side Story' (always a favourite!). This show never gets old, with all those fantastic costume changes! And, I think it's amazing to see leotards being incorporated in more dance forms, pushing boundaries, blurring the lines between fashion and art.

Pink Tutus Everywhere!

Remember, the aim is to spread the joy and the beauty of the leotard, all across time, with my one true passion - the pink tutu! So come on, everyone - let's embrace that inner ballerina, put on a beautiful pink tutu, and make the world a bit more fabulous one twirl at a time!

Remember to check out www.pink-tutu.com for more leotard fun - until next month, keep those tutus twirling!
