Hello darlings! Emma here, your favourite pink tutu-clad time traveler, and I’m back with a new installment of my Pink Tutu Travels! This month I’m taking a trip back to 1997 - an iconic year in the world of leotard fashion, which has so much to offer us even today.
This past month has been a whirlwind! A little reminder: I’m currently fundraising for my next adventure with some absolutely dazzling street performances in my home town of Derbyshire. Those of you in the area, be sure to come down for a bit of tutus and sparkle - my performances are definitely a sight to behold! Speaking of leotard fashion...
This time, my sparkly pink time travel leotard transported me back to May 1997, right in the heart of the Britpop era. And believe me, the 90s leotard scene was an absolute explosion of colours and styles! Think bold prints, neon hues, and all those delightful sporty cuts! And can we talk about the sheer volume of gorgeous tulle! This era is definitely giving us inspiration for some seriously stylish looks in 2023!
The 90s Leotard Landscape - It's A Symphony of Styles
The most remarkable thing about the leotard fashion in 1997 was the incredible range! From the sporty sleekness of gymnastic leotards to the free-flowing femininity of ballet, there was something for everyone!
The Power of Pink
Of course, being the passionate pink lover that I am, I’m going to highlight the fact that pink leotards were everywhere in the 90s! I found myself captivated by a selection of stunning pink creations!
The first stop was a lovely ballet class in London. There, the girls were practicing in a range of lovely leotards. I was utterly enchanted by the ballet pink, soft and delicate, contrasted against the beautiful shades of blush pink that some of the students had chosen! There’s just something about the way pink moves across the stage. It’s so graceful and graceful and oh-so elegant!
Next up, I found myself right at the centre of a trendy gym. The leotards were in bold, punchy hues of magenta and fuschia - just as perfect for dance, exercise, or even just lounging around at home! It’s a shade of pink that’s just brimming with energy and confidence!
And of course, let's not forget the amazing pink tutus I spotted! I'm dreaming about getting myself a gorgeous pink tutu that was made from a whole cloud of soft, tulle-y goodness just like the ones I saw!
A Spotlight on Leotard Variety
It wasn't just the colours of leotards that made this period so special! The shapes and silhouettes were an exciting evolution in leotard fashion, as the athletic look embraced its softer side! I mean, have you ever seen anything as cool as those ribbed crop tops with matching leotard skirts? It’s truly a timeless combo! I can already envision a stunning, pink version in my own wardrobe. I think those cut-out shoulder details would look absolutely incredible on me!
And it’s not just for ballet, you know! In 1997, there were so many ways to express your love for leotards through sports and exercise. I even came across some stunning leotards being worn by gymnasts. They were in brilliant jewel tones, like deep ruby red, turquoise, and emerald green, and adorned with sparkly embellishments. What a dream! I bet I could make a really beautiful dance routine with a leotard that colour and style, featuring the stunning sparkling detail!
The Magic of 90s Tulle
Now, there was one item I couldn’t resist, that I simply had to own from my 1997 trip. You can’t go back in time to the 90s without mentioning the fabulous world of tulle! It was everywhere, from the stages of world-renowned ballets to the most fashionable street wear. The layers upon layers of crisp and elegant tulle in my chosen pink tutu absolutely transformed the stage when I strutted my stuff. Honestly, who could ever get enough of those beautiful, ethereal, romantic ruffles?
I fell absolutely in love with a vintage tulle tutu shop in Covent Garden! It had a fabulous array of colours and lengths - the kind of perfect tutus to dress up and go out with, but they’d be just as incredible for dance performances. I had a good browse and settled on an absolute show-stopper of a fluffy pink creation. This is definitely going to become one of my most treasured possessions, perfect for my upcoming performance! I couldn’t leave the shop without finding myself a magnificent ballet-style leotard made of pale pink lace! A bit of old-school vintage charm with a touch of pink magic? Sign me up!
Time Travelling Fashion Inspiration
You might think, "Emma, this was a while back. Why are you telling me about leotards from 1997?" Because, darlings, the past is filled with gems. The trends from 1997 are making a huge comeback, which means the fashion in leotard world has definitely come full circle! Think sleek sporty lines mixed with those fantastic splashes of vibrant color. It’s a recipe for fantastic and very flattering style!
So if you're a fashion-forward leotard lover like me, get inspired! Don't be afraid to add some 90s touches into your wardrobe!
