Post Number 1712
Hello my darlings! Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood pink tutu wearing ballerina blogger, ready to whisk you off on another fabulous journey through time! This month, I’m zipping back to August 2001 and it's already got me feeling oh-so-nostalgic.
Remember that era? Pop culture was ablaze with Britney, S Club 7, and the Spice Girls, everyone had a flip phone and we were all dancing to that infectiously catchy song "Lady Marmalade." And as for leotard fashion? It was a whole new world of vibrant colours, dynamic styles, and daring cuts that really shook things up in the dancewear world!
*(Outfit of the Day) This month, I'm feeling the *Britney Spears vibe and wearing my super sparkly silver leotard. It's got these adorable little diamante-studded straps that just make me want to spin! Topped off with a super bouncy pink tutu and a sprinkle of glitter - I'm ready to shimmy back to 2001! **
Where in the world of leotard fashion did my pink tutu land this time?
This month I'm waltzing my way to New York City - a city buzzing with creativity, innovation, and leotard trends! The city was just bursting with incredible energy in 2001 - a melting pot of culture and the absolute heart of the American fashion scene.
Back in August 2001 the fashion world was all about layering – and trust me, that applied to the leotard scene too. Think about the classic dance looks with leggings or tights over your leotard for added coverage. High-waisted leotards with skirts or flowing pants created beautiful silhouettes and played with textures. Leotards with built-in mesh panels were just so in, showcasing a peek-a-boo style and offering ventilation for the intense workouts.
Did you know...? *That *2001 was when the fashion giant H&M launched their Dancewear collection?! And let me tell you, they knocked it out of the park with their collection! They made a serious statement by taking the leotard beyond the ballet studio. They designed leotards that were perfect for street style and gave off an edgy vibe, blending sporty styles with glamorous textures. And those sparkly leggings they made? Absolutely fabulous!
But let's step back in time to before my time-travelling adventure! Back in my hometown of Derbyshire, things were a bit more…classic. Let's just say Leotard fashion wasn't as “loud” back then - a lot of my time was spent looking for vibrant colour palettes, shimmering fabrics, and playful cuts – that kind of "I-don't-need-permission-to-shine" look. Finding leotards that embodied this spirit felt like a real treasure hunt - especially with my unwavering love for all things pink!
Let’s travel back a little further… to the 1990s in Derbyshire
Remember the time of Take That and Boyzone? And who could forget those chunky platforms! This is when my love affair with bold leotard patterns truly began! The nineties were an era for expressive individuality and creativity. In a land of “colour, colour, colour!”, there was so much leotard style experimentation – geometric prints, abstract designs, and even animal prints were boldly flaunted. Even paisley prints had a moment in the spotlight! I mean, could a leotard really get more fabulous?! I actually found the coolest black and white geometric-patterned leotard in a little local vintage shop. I felt like a rebel rockstar from a 1990s music video!
And then, there's my absolute favorite era – the 1980s in Derbyshire
Think neon pink leg warmers, oversized headbands and, oh my goodness, those bright, beautiful bright colours!! They were so vibrant! It was the golden age of fun, creativity, and individuality - just like my love for the pink tutu! And it truly embodied the spirit of "bigger is better," from shoulder pads to the fantastic voluminous tutus. Those massive tu-tu’s were literally a dream come true - a symbol of everything that was wonderfully bold and unapologetic about the era. There was something about them that just made me feel like I could do absolutely anything – soar through the air like a ballerina from outer space!
*Fashion Shows I Loved! *
While 2001 had me dancing my heart out in NYC, a trip to London in 1995 is forever etched in my mind! It's where I had the absolute thrill of witnessing An Evening of the Great British Ballet Stars at the Royal Opera House - talk about an unforgettable leotard spectacle! I loved everything - the traditional pastel pink tutus, the sleek, figure-hugging black leotards, and those incredible custom-made, embellished tutus designed by the world's leading fashion houses. It was like watching a fairytale come to life!
My Tips for Dancing Through Time with a Pink Tutu!
Travelling through time with my pink tutu has given me some pretty epic style secrets. Here's some advice for adding some extra magic to your leotard look -
1. Embrace Colour: I believe that every shade of the rainbow deserves a turn in your dancewear! Go for bold brights, dreamy pastels, or elegant blacks - but always, always choose colours that reflect your true personality! 2. Embrace Texture: Think luxurious velvet, flowy silk, and sparkly sequin fabric. It doesn't get much better than this when it comes to making a grand, dramatic statement on the dance floor. 3. Shine Brighter than Ever! * You don’t have to wear glitter everywhere you go, but there's no denying its absolute allure. A few sprinkled jewels on your leotard or tutu can really make all the difference - or even a leotard completely covered with shimmering sparkles! Let those little details do all the talking. *4. Never underestimate a great pair of tights: From bright, contrasting colours, to intricate patterns and delicate lace, tights are a must-have! 5. Playful Patterns are a Must: From geometric designs, classic stripes, and daring polka dots to whimsical florals and sparkling stars, there is no end to pattern options. It’s time to embrace the joy of letting your individuality shine through! 6. Don't Forget the Accessories: Fabulous hair pieces are essential! The more, the merrier – and a beautiful headpiece, a striking headband or even a bejewelled hair clip, adds that touch of regal elegance and helps pull your whole look together.
Sharing the Love for Leotards

A feeling of boldness, confidence, and pure, unapologetic happiness.
