This month I’m really buzzing about this one. A right little trip back to the dawn of a style revolution! As the UK was still basking in the summery sunshine of August, fashionistas across the world were looking to the new season. Let's have a look back and see what was turning heads...
The Journey:
This month, I found myself jetting (time-jetting, that is) over to New York, the mecca of all things stylish. Remember my sparkly pink leotard? It’s all glitter and magic, you know. And when you travel through time, the outfit can really make all the difference. I can tell you, you do not want to end up with a leotard out of place in the timeline – fashion mishaps are no joke. But thankfully my leotard worked its magic once more, whisking me straight to the front row of the hottest fashion show in the city, where, naturally, all the leading names in fashion were present.
2005: Fashion and Leotards:
What’s a bit of a leotard fashion insight to say for September 2005? Well, hold on tight as I give you the rundown of the season’s key trends. Oh, and let me remind you darlings, the early 2000s saw a complete change in fashion that wasn't just about looking stylish, it was a full-blown social revolution of fashion expression. And it's all about finding a new love of leotards for the 21st century, trust me.
Firstly, denim. Remember how everything was denim? Denim dresses, jeans and jackets were dominating the catwalk and streets everywhere. This fabric, for a moment in time, represented casual, cool and edgy at the same time. The power of a perfect jean!* I tell you! And it goes hand-in-hand with the leotard boom in fashion history. Let’s just say we’re not just seeing the classic ballet leotard, this era has the leotard stepping outside its ballet box and blending into all the new trends, giving us something utterly fabulous!
Second, athletic wear. This look has continued its unstoppable journey from gyms and track fields to catwalks. Think sporty joggers, cropped tops and – you guessed it! - leotards (always leotards). And those classic athletic looks with the perfect leotard, all thanks to brands like Nike, Reebok, and Puma. I mean, who knew that a simple pair of leggings and a well-chosen leotard could be so stylish and functional? That’s exactly what these trends are telling us.
Then we can’t forget bright colours and statement patterns, they were definitely in the spotlight this September 2005. Fashion was daring to be loud and expressive, which meant a complete shift from the dark, toned down looks of previous years.
Oh, and fringes and layers. A classic look that, when you add leotards, creates an unforgettable fashion mix that could be seen anywhere. Leotards, fringes and layers, just wow.
And finally, I have to give a little shout-out to skinny jeans. We can’t talk about 2005 fashion without them, can we? Oh, how the little old jean has just become an iconic style statement.
But let's get back to leotards. Now, there's more to this style explosion than meets the eye, darlings! It wasn't just a case of people going out to buy a whole wardrobe full of leotards. It was something deeper, a complete leotard re-invention. This year's leotards were about taking risks, with bold colours and a range of materials, like those shimmery new leotards, even metallic leotards – it was so fabulous.

And just when you thought leotards were just for dancers and gym bunnies, these 21st century trends really just opened the floodgates. Think classic leotards, fitted with ballet shoes. Then think a modern take: add chunky platform boots for an eye-catching outfit and your ready to rock.

As I explored the New York streets, it was a feast for the eyes to see just how fashionable everyone was. Leotards in every colour, material, and style were adorning the sidewalks of this bustling city. From classic leotard dresses in the chicest of black or sleek monochrome looks, to those fashion-forward styles in neon and all those other amazing colours – this was the perfect place to truly witness a leotard revival!
Of course, I wasn’t about to let this leotard adventure pass me by. I put my sparkly pink leotard on full display for the city and for the camera.
Oh, and did I mention those vintage-inspired leotards with those lace, floral and ribbon details that were taking the scene by storm? We even had a look at these stunning designs with high-neck lines – so elegant! Even more so, they were proving leotards could be perfectly paired with absolutely anything: jeans, trousers, or a statement skirt. The leotard is truly versatile – the ultimate multi-functional outfit item!
And of course, I found the ultimate accessories: matching hats, bags and those gorgeous pumps – everything to complete those stunning leotard ensembles.
And now, let me tell you, that vintage look is starting to have its own little comeback too, thanks to leotards. Remember those vintage stores and all that wonderful lace and vintage floral patterns – they are everywhere these days!
Let’s also not forget those amazing shops on those fashion streets where leotards are a big hit with the fashionistas of this world – from high-street stores to the big designers, the world is going leotard mad. This whole new trend was a mix of style, fashion and function.

Oh, and I just can’t end this post without a mention for the wonderful performances I’ve been fortunate to see! One of the truly iconic highlights of the year has been the spectacular Broadway shows featuring some absolutely dazzling performances. From the most elaborate costumes to those classic outfits with leotards, it truly captures how important this garment is to both theatre and ballet. A magical treat to experience live!
