Post 1844: August 2012 - Leotard Time Travelling Through The Decades! 🩰✨

Hello darling dears! Emma here, your very own time-travelling pink tutu aficionado, reporting from… well, where else but my very own, pink-sparkling, time-travelling leotard!

This month, I’m whisking us back to August 2012. You see, this date holds a special place in the heart of any leotard enthusiast. It's not about a specific historical leotard moment, but a significant milestone for how we wear them, especially in the world of… ballet!

You see, this August marked a turning point for many a ballet aficionado. For the first time, a modern, contemporary approach to the classical ballet form exploded onto the international scene with The Royal Ballet's “Alice's Adventures in Wonderland” production. Not only did this reimagined ballet cause a stir with its use of projections, animation, and multimedia, but it also showcased the brilliance of designer Bob Crowley’s costumes - think vivid, modern, and vibrant.

Imagine a mix of playful colour, dramatic silhouettes, and, dare I say it, a hint of goth, and you get a picture of what this ballet truly embodied. A far cry from the traditional white tutus that dominate the classical ballet world.

While I can't tell you what I actually witnessed during my visit to the premiere in London (as time travel comes with some, let’s just say… unforeseen circumstances), I can certainly share my thoughts and observations from researching the era!

The costumes were the real talking point - imagine a playful Alice, sporting a quirky, white cotton jumper dress (think, Victorian-inspired), and an asymmetrical black bodice, teamed with thigh-high tights with printed designs. Talk about *modernity meets tradition!

For those White Rabbit and Queen of Hearts characters, the jumpsuit became a focal point. Bob Crowley cleverly played with a combination of silks and cottons, a touch of velvet, and an emphasis on dark colours. I'd wager you could even spot the iconic heart pattern that made such a statement on the Queen of Hearts' jumpsuit!

But it wasn't just the design that caught my eye. There was a whole vibe going on! The use of these daring colours, and the contemporary cuts, felt revolutionary! I can only imagine the buzz surrounding this new take on ballet fashion! It really broke the mould, sending ripples through the dance world.

Of course, this ballet was a visual treat. This era's costume designers, including Bob Crowley, played a crucial part in ushering in a new wave of style and design, bringing us to a moment in time when the world of dance fashion felt decidedly more... interesting!

Now, who said time travel wasn't about fashion trends? It's certainly not for everyone, darling, but I'm obsessed with how history can influence what we wear now, and how trends can truly inspire change, particularly in a world that loves tradition like the ballet!

If this August trip proves anything, it’s that ballet, fashion, and, of course, leotards are constantly evolving and pushing the boundaries! So much excitement!

Before we part, my darlings, I’m delighted to share a few tidbits from the world of leotard fashion this very day, August 2012:

  • Dancewear specialists like Bloch, Capezio, and Danskin continue to be popular with dancers worldwide.
  • Lycra and spandex are still dominating leotard fabric choices, thanks to their stretch and comfort.
  • Classic leotards, with rounded necklines, and back cuts, were still in high demand. But, dancers were increasingly opting for scoop necks, camisole-style leotards, cut-out backs, and longer sleeves, injecting some fashion flair.
  • Pink remains a firm favourite colour choice, proving you can never go wrong with a classic.
  • Black, white, navy leotards are always in high demand!
  • And the humble tights, the quintessential companion of the leotard! Remember my favourites – mesh and lace for an extra touch of fashion fun, glitter for extra pizzazz!

Time travel, leotards, fashion - what more could a girl ask for?! Next month, my dear friends, I promise an adventure, a whirlwind tour of that fabulous time when… well, you’ll have to wait and see! But until then, keep dancing! 💖
