Hey loves! Emma here, your resident pink tutu enthusiast, and I'm back with another exciting journey through time. Today we're diving into June 2016 - a whirlwind month that saw incredible dance trends and a sprinkle of glittery history for us leotard lovers!
My time machine - a sparkly pink leotard I lovingly call "The Dream Weaver" - whisked me off to a world of dance in its prime. Imagine, London buzzing with exciting street performances, while dazzling shows shimmered under stage lights. Oh, the glamour!
My journey began in Derbyshire, where I danced beneath the famous Peak District skies, then travelled through a magical whirlwind to the heart of London, and on to the global fashion scene.
The leotard styles back then were oh-so-chic!
Firstly, the high neck leotard! It was everywhere, adding a dash of elegant mystery to even the most dynamic routines.
I found myself drawn to the vibrant colour palette – emerald greens, striking blues, and a kaleidoscope of colours all danced on the stage. The designs were incredible! There were daring cut-outs, sporty mesh panels, and flowing bell sleeves that swirled with every graceful movement.
And the tutus? My goodness! I was surrounded by them – classic puffy tutus, with layered tulle, and even some contemporary tutus in unexpected textures.
But what made this period truly special were the captivating costumes seen on dancers all around the globe.
Let's take a look at what was happening:
*London, 2016 - "The Phantom of the Opera" : * A grand spectacle at Her Majesty’s Theatre, the iconic show transported me back to the romance of the Victorian era. The leotards worn by the ballet corps, all black and flowing with elegant lace detail, were positively mesmerising!
*New York City, 2016 - "American Ballet Theatre": * This celebrated ballet company was showcasing breathtaking choreography and a stunning display of ballet leotards. I witnessed intricate, custom-made pieces featuring luxurious fabrics and breathtaking design, showcasing a true fusion of dance and fashion.
*Paris, 2016 - "Le Bal des Débutantes" : * Imagine a ball where fashion and dance intertwine in the most extraordinary way! This magnificent gathering, known as the "Bal des Débutantes," boasted incredible ensembles, featuring ball gowns, elegant eveningwear and… you guessed it – beautiful leotards!
*Hong Kong, 2016 - "A Thousand Dreams: The Ballet Concert" : * Hong Kong radiated with talent! This mesmerizing show featured an extraordinary array of dance styles, from traditional Chinese to contemporary ballet. Leotard designs? An eclectic mix! Everything from silk, chiffon to beautifully intricate patterns were on show, captivating with their rich colours and playful textures.
The Ballet Trend of the Time:
In 2016, there was a focus on graceful and elegant looks, a focus on bold colour palettes, and, of course, the iconic tutus! But something extra special stood out during my visit:
- Metallic Fabrics: Oh how they glistened! Leotards adorned with metallic trims, shimmery fabrics and reflective details captured the light with every pirouette, creating a captivating optical illusion on the stage.
- Cropped Leotards: This design was everywhere! They highlighted dancers' toned physiques while offering a more contemporary, edgy twist.
The sheer variety and beauty of leotards around the globe during 2016 was remarkable. The designs spoke to the spirit of innovation and fashion – and my own desire to create a style that empowered and inspires!
And what's more empowering than wearing a pink tutu? It's not just a garment – it's a statement, a way to celebrate dance and individuality.
Oh, before I forget! My latest pink tutu design - "The Raspberry Rhapsody," is taking the stage in the Derbyshire countryside! I’ve just launched my fundraising dance classes! Come join me!
Let’s get dancing!
Love, Emma
