Post #1912: Back to the Ballet! April 2018 & a Trip Back in Time!

Hello darlings! It's Emma here, back with another fabulous edition of the Pink-Tutu blog. This month, we're taking a trip back in time! I can't believe it's been another year since my last visit to the wondrous world of leotard fashion history - a world filled with such delightful, surprising and utterly glamorous threads. This month, I've set the Time-Traveling Tutu to April 2018, so fasten your dancing shoes and get ready for some spectacular leotard discoveries!

My Travel Outfit: A Sparkling Spectacle!

Let's face it, when you're travelling through time in style, you need a travel leotard that reflects your sartorial spirit, don't you? This month, my fabulous sparkly pink leotard was adorned with swirling pink sequins that captured every time-travelling twinkle, a leotard worthy of any fairy godmother (and even more sparkly than my beloved tutu!). It made travelling through time an absolute joy, dazzling every past era with its fabulousness.

Leotard Fashion 19th Century Style:

Our first stop took us right back to the Victorian era - where dance meant elegance and refinement. Can you imagine, darlings, when a leotard was considered risqué and only worn under other clothing? They were made from wool or silk and were quite loose, very different to our skin-tight beauties of today!

Imagine a ballet company in England - their leotards made of heavy fabric, and their performance clothing in stark contrast to our dazzling contemporary costumes! It's all about contrast, my dears! I actually rather fancy trying one of those vintage leotards! You know what I'm thinking? We could have a #PinkTutuGoesVictorian dance challenge - who's in? Let's keep the tradition of leotard fashion going, but with a fun twist!

Leotard Fashion in 1930's America

Our journey then zipped forward to 1930s America. The "Jazz Age" was all about expressing one's individuality - a glorious era that really ignited dance as a powerful form of expression! Leotard fashion was just starting to embrace that boldness, with sleek lines and elegant colours becoming commonplace. Imagine a shimmering leotard with a flowing skirt, or maybe even a hint of feather trim, perfect for dancing under the lights of a fabulous American dance club!

My dears, this era gave us such iconic dance legends! My favourites include Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire, two legendary dancers who epitomised that fun-loving and charismatic American style. Who wouldn't want to step back in time to see these dazzling legends performing in their elegant and chic costumes? It's inspiring, isn't it? This era helped cement leotard fashion as something to be celebrated.

Leotard Fashion Takes a Step Forward:

A visit to 1960s London was an absolute must - the heart of swinging '60s fashion! London's burgeoning ballet scene took center stage in this exciting time of liberation. And what about the costumes? A mix of bold colour, flowing fabrics, and experimentation with styles was the key, allowing the dancer's movements to speak for themselves. The focus was on functionality and artistic freedom!

This decade saw a change in design, with more focus on movement and less on the "hidden" nature of the early leotard. A perfect example is the stunning choreography of the Royal Ballet - I just can't help myself when I think of all the elegant leotards that gracefully flowed across the stage. Ballet started embracing its dynamic beauty, and leotard design mirrored that shift perfectly! It was, and still is, all about expression, darlings!

Modern Leotards: The Ultimate Expression of Fashion and Dance:

I, of course, couldn't travel back in time without experiencing the modern world of leotard fashion! 2018 marked the beginning of an even bolder era for leotards! Bold prints, unique colour palettes and luxurious materials are becoming the norm! Imagine delicate lace, flowing silks, and vibrant patterns that create truly magical ensembles! Even better, with the rise of online communities and independent designers, the choice for leotard fashion lovers has never been greater!

This vibrant diversity is something I celebrate in every edition of Pink-Tutu, whether through my street ballet performances, which I rely on to fund my travels, or in my blog. You might spot me in my dazzling pink tutu, performing "The Pink Tutu Suite" – my very own signature choreography! I encourage all you fashion-forward dancers to unleash your inner sparkle with creative expressions of dance, because let's face it, what better way is there to embrace the spirit of leotards and tutus?

The End of a Journey - But the Start of Something New!

And so, another amazing journey through leotard history is done! It's time to say goodbye for now, darlings. This is the end of a fantastic voyage into the past, filled with leotards galore and inspiring dance journeys!

But what better way to end this month's post than with some fantastic upcoming dance shows? I just know you'll be as excited about them as I am.

Upcoming Ballet Shows to Delight!

  • Derbyshire Ballet Presents: "The Sleeping Beauty": Right here in my home county, my love for ballet shines! A timeless tale, beautiful choreography, and elegant costumes make this production one not to be missed. I'll be there in my signature pink tutu! Who knows, maybe I'll even catch up with you there!

  • London’s Royal Opera House: "Giselle" This captivating story, stunning choreography, and the timeless beauty of the costumes are bound to enchant you. You know, my dear, it just wouldn't be the same without those incredible, flowy tutus and those romantic ballet costumes, would it? It’s an incredible spectacle of elegant dance, leotard and tutu fashion - and, of course, pure enchantment.

  • Royal Ballet Performances in Paris! It’s a little trip abroad but I couldn't finish without this one. Nothing beats the magical grandeur of a performance at the Paris Opera House, especially those legendary costumes from the iconic ballet "Swan Lake" - pure grace and ethereal beauty. Don't miss out on this experience!

I'll leave you with a final thought, my dearest dancers, Remember, when you slip into a leotard, you're embodying history. It's more than just a piece of clothing. It's an evolution of artistry and expression that connects generations of dancers. So wear your leotard proudly, my loves!

And let’s get ready to welcome the next journey – it’s time to put on that sparkly leotard, spin a tale of fashion history, and let the magic of dance unfold once more! See you all in a month for a new blog, my darlings! Keep the Pink-Tutu dreams alive!
