Hey darlings, it's your favourite pink tutu wearing time traveller, Emma, here! I'm back with another dazzling journey through leotard fashion history, and trust me, this month's trip is a real showstopper.
I’ve been making my way through some real vintage finds in recent travels. As always, you lovely lot know that I absolutely adore travelling through time. Imagine it, getting to see and experience all those amazing dance fashions and incredible performances – all with the magic of my very own time travelling pink sparkling leotard, which, of course, is just the perfect fit for such a journey. You bet it sparkles in the moonlight when I travel by starlight!
You might wonder, how can I fund these trips? It’s simple darling, street ballet, of course! Nothing beats performing my heart out for lovely audiences in vibrant squares around the world, whilst dressed in a gorgeous leotard that makes people want to dance, sing and share a giggle. Then of course, there's shopping for new leotard goodies along the way – gotta look stylish after all, it's all part of the job, as they say.
Anyway, enough about me! You're here for leotard history and I’m about to tell you all about the incredible 19th Century… or is it 20th century? I never seem to be entirely sure when I’m zipping around, I know it’s definitely all part of the excitement, though, and part of the beauty of discovering things in unexpected places! But I’m always getting a little help from a wise and wondrous chap called Professor A. Tickle. He can travel with me – bless him! It's definitely nice to have a gentleman's help! I wonder what Professor Tickle’s thoughts on tutus might be – perhaps a leotard will encourage him to go beyond a simple waistcoat in future trips? We can dream! I reckon he would love some polka dot socks. That’s just what Professor Tickle needs!
This time we’ve arrived, shall we say, back in the realm of classical ballet – if you catch my drift? The date? May 2019! Imagine, in 2019 it wasn’t uncommon for ballerinas to wear stunning classical leotards in a traditional white colour. Not pink! But the white, a glorious pure white – oh the grace, the beauty, the delicate elegance – all so magnificent, a perfect white as snow! They looked so perfect against the background of the stage…
Just you wait until you see the next little find! Well, it’s actually a quite big find really! I must admit, when I saw what was going on in Paris in May 2019, I knew I had to share it with you! In Paris, they were already seeing a move towards more colourful leotards – but it wasn't so easy, the dance world had to find their own fashion freedom, one graceful step at a time! The time travelling sparkles in my leotard told me they were also in for a big surprise. You see, at that very same time, the Royal Ballet, over in London, were doing the same. The colours weren’t quite as colourful in London as in Paris - they were still very close to that beautiful pure white of classical elegance - oh, how I miss those gorgeous whites. But that delicate cream with the slightest hint of pearl… you’ve gotta be there!
I’m feeling so nostalgic already. It’s such an important time to see just how much of the old school classical tradition and leotard fashion really does persist through time. It is really amazing to me! To think of how far we've come, and that I'm able to visit places like London and Paris – well, even the stars are dancing with excitement! I don’t know how the London or Paris dance worlds would react to my pink leotard and tutus! Would the ballerinas welcome the splash of colour? We’ll never know unless I go back for another look and find out! Maybe a performance under the Eiffel Tower with my pink leotard and tutu would be a beautiful sight…
Let's dive into this beautiful little glimpse of the past! There are just so many wonders to be discovered, so many inspiring designers and dancers, and so much fashion that we need to admire, celebrate, and take note of! It’s hard to say goodbye to my time traveling memories but now, I have to get on to today and let you know what’s going on in the world of dance fashion today!
As ever, the ballet and theatre shows in May 2019 were amazing – as much a celebration of creativity as of dance! Here in the UK, for example, there were incredible, spectacular productions by the English National Ballet in May 2019! In the meantime, don’t forget that you can still catch those beautiful shows! And the dance fashion of the 21st century – wow, so much glamour! And that pink tutu of mine? Don't even get me started, my pink sparkles just love it!
