This month, we’re dancing back in time to May 2024, a period brimming with fabulous leotard fashions!
As always, I was whisked away by my sparkling pink time travelling leotard (it does have some pretty fantastic features!), and let me tell you, this month's trip was a whirlwind of excitement. It felt as if the world was embracing the versatility and elegance of leotards across all realms - ballet, dance, performance art, and even everyday fashion.

Dancing Through the Decades
The first stop on our time travelling escapade was a peek into the London Royal Ballet. It's always a joy to experience the exquisite artistry of these world-class dancers. They were preparing for a performance of "Giselle" - oh, how I love that ballet! The leotards in the rehearsal were beautifully crafted, and a nod to the classic designs from decades ago. The soft pink hues of the ballerinas' leotards matched their delicate pointe shoes, while the corps de ballet donned stylish, dark charcoal leotards, enhancing their sleek, elegant movements. It really emphasised how leotard design always balances practicality and beauty.
Speaking of sleek and elegant, one of my absolute favourite things about May 2024 was the resurgence of bodysuits. They’re not strictly a leotard, but they are absolutely smashing! I love how effortlessly they transition from the stage to everyday wear. I was particularly impressed by the way street style was blending leotard elements with everyday fashion, making it perfectly acceptable to wear a leotard with a chic blazer or a vintage skirt, something I would certainly encourage you all to try!
Shopping for a Pink Dream
To celebrate the amazing leotard fashion trends of May 2024, I decided to do a little shopping at the fabulous Barneys New York. They have an extraordinary range of designer leotards. I snagged myself the most exquisite hand-stitched lilac leotard, embroidered with delicate flower motifs. The delicate silk lining felt amazing, and it even came with matching dance shoes - absolute perfection! This purchase definitely fueled my desire to wear pink tutus everywhere and reminded me that every outfit needs a statement piece – and leotards absolutely tick that box!
My adventures in New York also gave me an opportunity to delve deeper into the vibrant world of contemporary dance. I found myself mesmerised by the incredibly diverse and inspiring leotard designs worn by dancers who are pushing the boundaries of traditional movement. From vibrant geometric patterns and sleek minimalist styles to playful pops of color, it was a joyous experience.
The Glamour of Ballet Performance
No journey through leotard history would be complete without attending a world-class ballet performance. This month, I headed to Paris for the Opéra National de Paris to see their rendition of "Swan Lake" and the sheer beauty of the leotard designs was breathtaking! The delicate tulle and soft satin, combined with the dancers' fluid movements, created a truly magical experience. I particularly loved the contrast between the ethereal, romantic white leotard of Odette, and the bold, fierce black leotard of Odile. Each movement emphasized the grace and athleticism of the dancers.
And then there was the Royal Opera House. It was truly the epitome of ballet opulence! From the traditional but always elegant black tutus of the "Nutcracker" to the mesmerizing vibrant red and orange creations for "La Bayadère", the performances showcased an explosion of colours and leotards that were truly inspirational.
Beyond the Stage: The World of Leotard Fashion
May 2024, saw leotards branching out from the realm of ballet and dance into the wider world of fashion! The fashion shows in Milan were alive with captivating outfits featuring leotard elements - from elegant evening dresses featuring leotard panels to daytime street-style looks that mixed leotards with jackets and tailored pants. It was wonderful to see leotards used in so many innovative ways, and it truly cemented their status as a timeless and versatile garment.
During my time in Milan, I also got to check out the amazing leotards available in high-street stores. From stylish black leotards with cutout detailing to colourful sporty leotards for yoga and Pilates, the options were vast!
One thing that really stood out was how inclusive the leotard industry had become, offering leotards designed for all bodies and styles. There were options for dance, fitness, and casual wear, each crafted to emphasize confidence and comfort.
Street Performance with a Pink Tutu Twist
You know how I love to make my own statement on the streets. In true Emma style, I was out on the streets, giving street performance a "pink tutu twist" in Barcelona! The crowds gathered and cheered, captivated by my vibrant energy and love for leotard fashion. They were mesmerised by my graceful movements, as my pink tutu flowed and twirled, highlighting the simple yet impactful elegance of a leotard.
This is what I love most about leotards: they allow everyone to dance and move freely. And when it comes to freedom and movement, let's face it - nothing says ‘embrace your inner confidence’ like wearing a pink tutu!
