Hello my lovely tutu-lovers!
It’s August already, and I am SO excited to be back with my 2000th blog post! Can you believe it’s been over five years since I started this pink paradise? Time really does fly when you’re having fun… especially when you’re busy time-travelling in your sparkly pink leotard, searching the world for the perfect tutu!
Speaking of sparkly pink leotards… have I told you about my latest time travel adventure? It was SO exciting! This time I went back to the year 1920… can you believe it? Yes, the Roaring Twenties, an era dripping in glitz, glamour and... you guessed it… fabulous leotard designs!
Twenties Fashion Fun - Dance the Charleston in a Leotard
Imagine, Derbyshire in the 1920s. The Peak District scenery was just as breathtaking as it is today, but fashion was truly different! You know how I love a good historical fashion adventure… well, this one was definitely up there with my favourites.
Imagine, instead of our beloved street wear, there were women and men wearing flapper dresses, wide-brimmed hats, and spats… I must admit, they looked absolutely smashing, especially in a ballet context.
I saw a fabulous ballet performance in London, at the Savoy Theatre, where I was practically transported back in time. They were performing the "Charleston" with incredible energy and precision… talk about bringing it!
And the leotards, oh, the leotards! All silk, and so wonderfully fitted - I'm talking graceful cuts that flowed with the body, accentuated with beading and embroidery, some of which were quite shockingly, for the time, revealing. It really highlighted the natural, beautiful silhouette of the body… something we love celebrating in the 21st century, don't we?
Finding the Perfect Pink Tutu... A Challenge
Naturally, I HAD to hunt down some perfect tutus. I was on a mission to find that quintessentially "Roaring Twenties" pink tutu. My challenge was finding a tutu that wasn't quite the exaggerated volume of our contemporary tutus, but which instead flattered the more elegant lines of the era's fashion. I mean, we had to honour that time period with a nod to their sleekness!
Fortunately, I bumped into the most incredible milliner. She was a genius with lace, tulle, feathers…everything a "tutuista" could dream of! She created the perfect pink tutu. A delicate design of wispy pink tulle, with the slightest hint of the 20s "boudoir chic," adding that little touch of intrigue to complete the overall look! It was like a ballerina meets a vintage movie star. It was amazing… absolutely swoon worthy!
On the Street, in the Pink!
While in the capital, I hit up a couple of shows. I must say, theatre life in the twenties was exciting - I loved it! I caught the new Charlie Chaplin movie, "The Kid", and I really loved the silent movies. The acting and the comedic genius of those artists was extraordinary! You really had to pay attention to the expression of the body, something I can definitely relate to in the world of ballet.
And naturally, I was street dancing in my 1920s inspired tutu - because you know, if I’m time travelling, I have to do it in style.
I felt the magic in the air… people were stopping to stare! Imagine, this Derbyshire girl dancing with the flair and energy of the Twenties in the streets of London! Talk about a "street dance phenomenon!"
2025 Leotard Fashion - Trends & Styles
So, now back to the present! We’ve got so much exciting leotard fashion happening in the world right now. We're truly living in the Golden Age of leotard style!
Here are a few of my faves…
Athleisure-inspired Leotards: You know, the mix of athleisure, comfortable fabrics with the elegance of the dance. Think comfy stretch materials with stunning mesh cut outs. The possibilities are endless.
Vintage Glamour - Leotards: I love those amazing "retro" styles that have been popping up. Leotards with bold cutouts, long sleeves, and gorgeous prints are amazing!
Sustainability Focus - Eco-friendly Leotards: A lot of brands are stepping up with leotards made from eco-friendly materials. From organic cotton and bamboo to recycled polyester, the fashion world is finding its conscience…and we are all for it!
Ballerina Body Awareness - Leotard Comfort & Functionality: I’m so excited about how brands are catering to different needs! The range of designs is vast, from full-coverage options to playful ones, it's all about celebrating different body types, with flattering fits and functional designs for diverse body movements.
The Rise of Street Leotards: Forget the restrictive rules of old! There is no place for conformity in our leotard fashion. The Street is the place to experiment! That's why street style has become the new frontier for the creative leotard designer, where the boundaries of art, dance, and street fashion collide in a truly captivating display of creativity.
And naturally, in 2025, pink is everything! Just look at those stunning vibrant pink street leotards... oh my goodness!
