Hello darling tutus!
It's Emma here, and you wouldn't believe what an incredible month I've had! It’s been a whirlwind of leotard fashion history, with trips to the past and, well, future-ish (is that even a word?) in my magical sparkly pink time-traveling leotard!
Time Traveling Through Leotard History: The Wonders of 2027
July always marks the start of my busiest time. Why, you ask? Because this month it’s the annual Leotard Fashion Festival in Derbyshire - where everyone gathers to show off their best leotard creations, whether it's an elegant, custom-made masterpiece or a simple, fun-to-wear number!
This year, however, was different! Because it was also the anniversary of the Leotard Fashion Festival, so naturally I had to time-travel and discover how it all started! Let me tell you, the origins of this beautiful event were something special!
1875: Back To The Victorian Age!
Yes, darlings, I jetted myself back to the 1870s, to a time of crinolines, petticoats, and …. leotards?! Well kind of…
It was fascinating, not quite the leotards we know and love today! Back then they were basically form-fitting, elastic-like garments called "body suits." Mostly worn by tightrope walkers and acrobats who needed that little bit of extra comfort to do their gravity-defying tricks. These body suits didn't really have sleeves, and the hems often fell right below the knee - a far cry from the shorter, vibrant leotards of today.
Even back then, I can see a tiny spark of leotard fashion evolving, with subtle patterns and variations in fabric used to make these original “body suits.” Just think, a glimpse into what would become the fabulous and fashionable leotards we see today!
I actually saw a picture in a journal of the famous circus acrobat, Miss Ada “Lily” Bell wearing this very unique garment, looking elegant and fearless as she balanced on the tightrope. I imagined the crowds gasping with wonder as she defied gravity, a truly remarkable sight!
I even found some gorgeous velvet and satin materials in a textile shop! It makes you realize that while leotards are constantly evolving, the need for comfort and elegance is a timeless concept that has resonated across the ages!
A Glimpse Into The 2000s
From there, it was a hop, skip, and jump (and a little spin in my sparkly pink leotard) into the 2000s. This era saw leotard fashion evolve significantly, incorporating elements of fashion that were very ‘90s and very ‘80s.
Can you believe how fast fashion evolves?!
I even bumped into my favourite vintage leotard shop, which was a time capsule! Filled with bold, colorful, and eye-catching designs that were very much a signature of the era! It brought me right back! Imagine: neon colours, a love for animal print, and bold silhouettes.
Leotards weren't just for dancers back then. There was this incredible rise in ‘activewear’ – they became everyday wear. The 2000s was really a time for embracing bold colours, empowering your inner fashionista. What a time!
The Leotard Fashion Festival Of 2027
Back in 2027, it was time to enjoy the main event! And it was just as fabulous as I remembered it! The Leotard Fashion Festival was bursting with energy, creativity, and all kinds of beautiful tutus! So much pink – my favourite!
I even got a chance to meet the designers! The most inspiring of the designers, Ms Willow Mayfield, spoke so passionately about how leotards represented personal freedom, and expressed creativity! She gave a wonderful speech and really emphasised the role of a leotard: it was not just about a beautiful garment but also an expression of yourself! She actually had a tutu designed with tiny sparkling stars on it and she made me cry!
Then it was time for the competition! The designers had poured their heart and souls into creating the most unique leotards, showcasing the very essence of what a leotard is. Some used a rainbow of colours, others incorporated elements from other cultures! It was truly awe-inspiring! I'll be posting more about it later on!
A Whirlwind of Leotard Fashion Inspiration
I saw tutus made from a rainbow of fabrics, every texture and colour imaginable - from silks, to soft cottons, and shimmering fabrics! It was simply breathtaking! There were so many styles, it would make your head spin!
What’s even more incredible about all of this is the community we have! There were dancers of all ages, professionals, beginners and little darlings who loved to spin! It truly showcased the beautiful universality of the leotard, it was a great event!
Looking Ahead
This July, my mind is buzzing! I can't wait to plan all the leotard fashion adventures that are to come! There’s so much leotard inspiration out there, and with this year’s Leotard Fashion Festival - you can bet your bottom dollar (or shall I say tutu!) that leotards will continue to take centre stage for many more years to come!

What’s New in Leotard Fashion?New Styles And Designs To Keep Your Eyes Peeled For:
This July was all about tutus, tutusi and more tutusi darlings! You couldn’t swing a cat without bumping into a tutu!
And yes, you can see why I just can’t help but obsess over these frothy, twirling dreams. A true leotard fashion lover can never resist the tutu love.
Here's a quick round up of what's hot:
- Layers are King: If you think the leotard can't get more versatile than it is - think again! We’ve got those stunning layering techniques, so trending now!
- A Little Glitter Never Hurts: From tiny sparkly sequins to shimmering tulle - I’m all for embracing that little bit of glamour in our leotards. It’s a fun, eye-catching addition to any style.
Sustainability is Queen: With all the leotards on offer these days, we have to look after the planet, too. Many brands are focusing on eco-friendly fabrics, like recycled polyester or bamboo. That way you can have your stylish leotards and wear them without any guilt.
Fabulous Show Time - Let’s Have A Ball!!
I know everyone's looking forward to what’s on the calendar this month. Well darlings let me tell you… There’s loads on and it’s* an amazing mix of theatrical events and street performances. What I love most, is that everyone has a chance to get into the tutu spirit.
*Here's what caught my eye this July: *
The Annual International Ballet Competition - If you are serious about ballet fashion (who isn't?) this one's for you. Think beautiful leotards, tutus galore, and so much inspiration. You can actually get involved, it’s more than just watching. I’m hoping to join the judging panel next year. You can find this every July in Vienna, Austria! I can't wait! I’ll be reporting from the event – of course!
- The London Street Arts Festival: Now this one’s for those who like their fashion a little more outside the box. Not just for tutus, although there are quite a lot on offer in this festival of all types of street arts, street dancers, musicians, visual artists – everything! It will be full of vibrant colours, music and artistic expression.
"The Lion King" (London): We all love the magic of the theatre - especially when it involves stunning leotard creations. The musical’s stunning costumes and tutus make it a must-see!
Keeping The Leotard Love Going:
This month is huge for anyone with a love for tutus! Make sure to look out for these events (and the fabulous people behind them), join a class, take some pictures – it’s not just about the fashion itself, but the community it brings together. We can all do our bit to keep this leotard love alive!
I know, darlings, we love leotard fashion at pink-tutu.com, and that’s what I’m all about! Keep on sharing your tutu style!
