Pink Tutu World: Ballet on Planet Earth - Post 50 (1996-04-10)

Hello, my darling tutu twirlers! It's Wednesday, and that means it's time for another installment of Pink Tutu World, straight from Planet Earth!

As usual, you lovely lot will find me sporting a magnificent new creation, my newest pink tutu – an explosion of bubblegum pink tulle and diamantĂ© with feathers on the skirt and a fluffy boa in my hair!

This week, I’m here to talk about my latest trip, a whirlwind tour of the Earthly ballet world! My journey took me from the cobbled streets of Derbyshire to the glitzy, glittering world of Broadway! I’m positively tickled by all of it – the theatre lights, the costumes, the music! I must tell you all about it, from beginning to end

Back in Derbyshire

I was born and raised in Derbyshire, a sweet little county in England. It’s known for rolling hills, sheep, and its wonderful ballet heritage – though, don’t tell anyone, it’s slightly quieter than Broadway!

You won’t believe what happened last week – a little birdie told me about a ballet performance in a local church hall. It’s the tiniest stage, you could barely fit all the dancers, let alone a proper orchestra! I absolutely adore these community performances – there’s a warmth and a magic to them you don’t find anywhere else.

And oh, darling! The costumes! I had to go back to the dance shop after the show to buy some of the fabric for myself. The dance teacher told me it’s all hand-sewn by a group of lovely ladies, and they were just as delighted as me to have me amongst them. This is what ballet is all about, darlings – bringing people together!

I had the chance to speak with the teacher, too – and he had a funny story for me. He said the oldest dancer, Mrs. Cartwright, still insists on performing en pointe, and that she even brought her own tutu, which her grandmother bought her back in the 1930s – just think of the history on that beautiful tutu! He even let me touch it after the show – simply divine!

Of course, the story wouldn’t be complete without some serious fashion discussion. It's truly inspirational to see the costumes they come up with, given the resources. I'm certain the teacher would be thrilled to receive a little boost of pink power in the shape of a sparkly pink tulle tutu or two!

Off to Broadway!

And after Derbyshire, it was onto New York!

Oh, my dear tutu friends, Broadway truly lives up to its name! It was a whole other world, all twinkling lights, towering buildings and enough champagne and canapĂ©s to keep even the most enthusiastic fashionista satisfied! I landed on planet earth just as New York was preparing to put on its most fabulous spring extravaganza – “La Sylphide” by August Bournonville. The story follows a sweet young girl named Effie who finds herself caught between her fiancĂ© James and the captivating Sylphide, a creature of the air.

Oh my goodness! The costumes! Fabulous, of course, just as you’d expect from Broadway. There was exquisite hand-sewn silk for Effie and James, feathers on the head for Sylphide, and a riot of vibrant colour for the rest of the dancers. And, of course, the tulle. Tulle as far as the eye can see – fluffy, elegant, with that delicate texture you can barely imagine! If you ever get a chance to see “La Sylphide” live on Broadway, don't even hesitate for a second. Just grab your ticket, find your most glamorous pink tutu and dive into this delightful performance!

And oh, dear friends, the food! We must talk about the food. New York City offers a smorgasbord of delicious treats! From Broadway restaurants overlooking the dazzling skyline to hidden Parisian cafes serving divine petit fours, each culinary journey felt like a whimsical step in a fairy tale. Every morsel felt like an experience for the senses! I had my own personal guide – the charming and exceptionally well-dressed (he even knew all the best vintage tutu shops in the city) Oscar, who showed me all the sights, took me to see the fabulous PinkTutu brand boutique (you'd never guess what their new summer collection looks like) and even persuaded a well-known, but anonymous, actress to allow me to donate one of my signature pink tutus to charity.

I’m afraid my lovely New York adventure came to an end much too soon. But never fear! The beauty and the memories are here to stay!

A New Project!

Now I have to tell you about my fabulous new project: Operation Pink Tutu World! That’s right, darlings! I'm setting out to make the universe a brighter and pinker place by promoting the art and joy of tutu-wearing everywhere. So, get ready to don those tulle delights! Whether it's a simple ballet tutu for class or a shimmering, statement piece for an evening gala, I hope my pink tutu energy will inspire you all!

Let’s spread the joy of the pink tutu! You can follow me on my adventures here, or on PinkTutuWorld.com. And do tell me! What pink tutu are you going to wear today?

Sending you all loads of love, sparkles, and endless pink tutus!

*Yours in Tulle, *

Emma

P.S. Don’t forget to tune in next week, as I’ll be sharing my latest outfit, inspired by a little trip to Paris, where I enjoyed some divine croissants, shopped for gorgeous, frothy tulle in the Marais district, and possibly found my future pink tutu home! Until then, let’s dance with glee!
