Welcome back to Pink Tutu World, my darlings! It's Wednesday, the day we all know means one thing: a new blog post from yours truly! Grab your favourite pink cocktail and settle in, because this week, I'm spilling the celestial tea about my latest interstellar adventure.
Remember last week when I was raving about that divine, shimmery tulle I snagged on the moon? Well, that purchase wasn't just a whim. No, my sweet peaches, it was a strategically planned purchase. This trip, I was off to planet Earth! And my mind, darling, was tickling with ideas about the perfect tulle tutu to compliment the planet's very earthy palette. I can hear you giggling at that pun, and, yes, my dear, I am quite the pun queen, but there is no time for tea parties at the moment, not with the blog post to get written, and... well... this is where it gets exciting!
It was 1997-05-28 on the earth. Earth's date system is a bit weird, we're talking 28th of May, 1997. I'd been researching this date and the whole thing had me bubbling over like a bottle of bubbly on a star ship.
1997 was the year the dance movie 'Everyone Says I Love You' released on the earth, and what a delight it was! You all must know Woody Allen. Woody, with his signature witty dialogue, his character-driven storylines, and those absolutely brilliant characters? Imagine Woody doing a ballet! It is as magical as it sounds. His style of dance is a blend of contemporary ballet, ballroom dance, and modern dance! Oh, he even incorporated his signature comedic style, so there were belly laughs throughout the show! I do think everyone said I loved it! The movie stars Julia Roberts, Edward Norton, and Drew Barrymore, all dancing, which is something you can only dream about! Imagine having your three best girlfriends all dressing in tutus and showing off some of their most stylish moves in front of a large screen? Now imagine the world! It was fabulous! It's one of my favourites to wear and dance in, but for a truly magical event I decided I needed something even more spectacular!
My inspiration was the city, my darlings, a very special city in a place called England on planet earth. It was a city called Derby, on the planet earth. And it was this Derby that inspired me for my earth adventure. This date was a real big deal on earth, my darlings. It was the date for the first Derby dance festival, and I just had to go and get to Derby as quick as a ballerina can turn en pointe.
I know what you are all thinking, my loves. Of course, I had the perfect ensemble picked out for the Derby Dance Festival: a ballet shoe inspired pair of fuchsia suede peep toes - the most stunning pair - which perfectly matched the best hot pink fluffy tutu, you ever did see, I even went the extra mile, I found some glittery silver sequined material to layer around the bottom and up to the hem of the tutu - all I have to say about this design - chic. It felt divine, and was just perfection for dancing in the festival. It was all about getting in touch with planet earth.
Now, here is the real magic of my Derby date - remember what I told you last week - that I'd snagged shimmering, moonlit tulle on the moon, well - it's come in super handy for this Derby dance adventure because guess what my lovelies? Derby is actually called 'The Home of the Tulle'!
You see, my dearest, when my team and I went to Derby I got my glitter fix. The city is the home to some of the oldest, biggest and most historic tulle mills on earth. It's a very special place. There was the opportunity to make tutus in the Derby factory that used to be a silk spinning mill - and the mills were built by my planet earth ancestor!
I have always loved finding things out about my family history - on the moon we all just 'are' and that is all there is - and everyone knows each other - and is the same age - but Earth people, especially Derby people have stories! The factory dates back to 1782 when the 'father of Derby' a person called Richard Arkwright, and his brothers set up their first spinning mill - It's quite a bit earlier than me. Richard and his brothers turned a 214 acres plot of marshland into a thriving mill centre and then - this is where it gets exciting! The place, which is still a town centre and shopping area now is known as 'Arkwright’s Original'. I'd had some lovely time with the workers and owners there and then my lovely, bubbly and extremely energetic team helped me plan an amazing surprise for all the 'original Arkwright' folk.
I found some delicate lace to embellish tulle in their factories and helped a ballet dance group called 'Move Into Dance', they're a fantastic team with amazing students to show off 'a touch of Derby, in Pink Tutu', and I have to say it went very well! What is even better - I have even filmed a movie in their factory - a beautiful ‘A touch of Derby, in Pink Tutu’!
In the show I wear all three colours in a tutu - of course. It goes without saying I wear a Pink one to represent the planet earth - then - for the story of the mill - I wear an ivory coloured tulle to reflect the original material. And then to reflect the silk I wear a rich and dark black! I can not give away all the secrets. It is the perfect mixture for the dancers from the Move Into Dance school who just took to dancing in their tutus!
When I showed off the new designs the dance school told me that they’re excited for my tutu design as the ‘first full length dance’ film which is to feature the beautiful dance school’s performance of the story in a factory. And that is all for this blog my darling. I think it is all time to wrap up. I can already see my favourite colour pink, so I can go off on an adventure, before we meet again - you can catch the last post by going to www.pink-tutu.com. Until next Wednesday, stay glittery! And as always, may your tutus be fluffy and your lives be filled with twirls.
Love, Emma
