Pink Tutu World: Planet Earth - 2000-05-10 (Blog Post #263)

Darling darlings!

Welcome back to my humble corner of the internet, your one-stop shop for all things pink and twirly. As you know, every Wednesday, I’m back with a brand new post from my travels across the vast universe – spreading the good news of tutus, glamour, and of course, all the glorious shade of pink!

Today, we're landing back on planet Earth, my birthplace! A little trip down memory lane, you might say! Though my spaceship travels keep me in the stars, the old home planet is still incredibly dear to my heart. And there’s nothing like revisiting the places where your journey began, to fuel your future adventures. So let’s get into the pink, shall we?

Today's date holds a special place in the heart of any ballet aficionado, a date that sends shivers down my spine every year – the anniversary of the first performance of the utterly legendary and spectacular, “The Rite of Spring” by the legendary Igor Stravinsky.

The ballet debuted on this day, 10th May 1913, in Paris. Imagine, darlings – just 87 years before my birth! That’s barely a blink in the universe. What a piece! Its powerful story of ancient Russian pagan rituals and its raw, captivating choreography left the entire audience astounded – and divided, too. What a show it must have been. Now, don't think this post will leave you hanging, just waiting for me to reveal the juicy details - I'm all about giving you the pink truth, even if it comes with a little history lesson!

To understand what makes "The Rite of Spring" so incredible, one has to delve into its backstory, the clash of innovation with the staid traditions of the time. The music is raw, full of bold dissonance and a pulsating rhythm that captured the feeling of the pagan rites. It's a sound that throws you headfirst into the energy of an ancient celebration.

But hold your horses, the ballet itself is where the magic truly explodes! The choreographer, Vaslav Nijinsky, went further than any choreographer before him, using the entire stage in revolutionary ways to capture the savage energy of the ritual. The audience went wild! There were hisses, jeers, fights in the stalls, and some folks even rushed the stage in protest!

For those of us who love to express ourselves in a little twirl, the Rite of Spring marked a pivotal turning point for ballet itself, and we can still feel the energy it released today. Now, this may not have been the reaction of pure ecstatic admiration that one hopes for a ballet performance. But we must look deeper! When one shatters the expectations, shakes the foundations of convention, stirs a crowd with such visceral emotion – it's evidence of art’s incredible power, isn't it, darlings?

“The Rite of Spring” brought fresh, wild energy to the ballet world. It’s a piece that begs to be experienced, felt, and understood in every beat. And it's one that truly deserves to be danced!

So next time you hear "The Rite of Spring" or step into a theatre with its primal energy flowing around you, give it a moment to seep into your bones and understand the revolution it represents. Remember how it shook the foundations, dared to be different and changed ballet forever! And for me, dear darlings, a piece that broke with tradition? Now that’s something that speaks right to my heart!

Since I am back in my birthplace this week, there’s a little ballet magic planned right here on earth that is giving me such a twirl of excitement. It’s an event I’ve been looking forward to ever since I left for my latest interstellar adventures, the very first ‘World Tutu Day’ celebrations! I just love those humans with their enthusiasm.

In my humble opinion, every day should be "World Tutu Day"! But May 10th, the day "The Rite of Spring" first wowed Paris, was a day to go out in a gloriously flamboyant tutus – which, to my delight, is just what they’ve decided to do.

How very delightful! It's all thanks to my favourite ballerina pal, Anna. It seems my dear Anna is not only a superstar dancer, she is also a gifted organizer, having managed to convince all of Earth to wear a tutu at least once a day to celebrate all things ballet. It was the most perfectly whimsical, pink-tastic, idea! All across the planet, tutus of all styles are getting worn, twirled, and celebrated, it's just magnificent, and I'm so incredibly proud of my darling friend, and excited to be part of it all!

Don't think for a minute that a little dance celebration like ‘World Tutu Day’ doesn’t affect us here on planet ‘Pink Tutu World’ too! For you see, darling, I simply cannot resist a challenge – and getting everyone in the galaxy into a tutu, well, it’s something I must tackle. The world needs a splash of pink. Don’t you think?

So here I am back in Derbyshire – what a wonderful county it is, even if my parents can’t understand my pink tutu obsession. Though a few extra twinkle lights and sparkles never hurt. (If only they could see my ship!)

Derbyshire is home to beautiful rolling hills, stunning country villages, and - you guessed it - a whole lot of stunning and captivating historical ballet. Derbyshire’s first-ever recorded theatre – in 1731! Can you believe that? We have some wonderfully preserved history right here – from quaint 19th century venues that housed spectacular stage productions, to magnificent mansions transformed into homes for the performing arts! Now you understand why I'm back here in Derbyshire this week. It is my absolute happy place – for ballet and for pink. It’s simply brimming with history and glamour. What more could one want?

And I think the best part about being back in Derbyshire – if I must pick a favourite, darlings! – is how I am going to see “World Tutu Day” being celebrated at the Derbyshire ballet festivals. My dear friends, if you’re ever looking for something to fill your life with dancing, Derbyshire ballet festivals are just the ticket. I highly recommend checking out the performances at the Matlock Town Hall – they have had many stellar ballet productions over the years, and even have a ballet club and dancing class for local children, too. Just gorgeous!

The Derbyshire ballet festival is always filled with beautiful dancers, vibrant costumes, and – this is the absolute best bit! – you get to mingle with everyone after the shows, a fabulous chance to soak in all the post-performance atmosphere and learn all the insider details. And, of course, to look for gorgeous, pink tutus, naturally! I always come home with something fabulous.

It truly is wonderful to return home and remember where my obsession with all things ballet really began. Now I need to pick my new tutu out for tonight – I wonder if it’s a bright pink or a baby pink evening, hmm, a decision for a real tutu fanatic.

Until next Wednesday,

Your dearest Pink Tutu
