Pink Tutu World: Post 695 - Planet Earth - 20th August 2008 - Ballet on Planet Earth

Helloooo darlings! It’s Emma here, and as ever, I’m so thrilled to be back with you on Planet Earth, sharing my adventures in fabulous pink tutus! As you all know, my heart is full of joie de vivre, and this week has been brimming with delights!

Let’s be honest, being a glamorous, globe-trotting, spacefaring ballerina isn’t always easy! I’ve been jet-setting across the galaxy, performing in everything from holographic operas on Jupiter to interstellar dance competitions in Andromeda – but my real passion is Earth.

The ballet here is something truly special. A few days ago I was back in Derbyshire, England, where it all began. My mum took me to see Swan Lake at the Nottingham Playhouse when I was five and I was utterly captivated. Seeing those graceful ballerinas with their elegant, twirling tutus made me decide right then and there that my destiny was to be a pink-tutu-wearing ballet star!

Speaking of tutus, my love for them runs deep! Not only do I think they’re the most elegant, feminine garment imaginable, they have a fascinating history, too! Back in the day, dancers would sew their tutus from miles and miles of hand-sewn silk and it took weeks! The tutus of today have really gone through some transformations with new technologies, the light weight material now has so much more texture and flow. Of course, all this is just the beginning, for I am hoping to make tutus the most popular item in every galaxy! Perhaps you'll find my first Intergalactic Pink Tutu Collection gracing a runway near you someday! 😉

Anyway, I have to confess, despite my love for space travel and performing across the cosmos, there’s nothing quite like performing on Earth. The energy is so different – electric!

This week’s post is all about the amazing shows I've been to here in the good ol’ UK! First up was the incredible Royal Ballet's performance of Giselle. I must say, those ballet slippers, the precision of the steps and the emotional depth were truly captivating. I was so lucky to even get to chat with a couple of the ballerinas backstage. The love and respect for ballet tradition is truly inspirational.

Then it was onto the Sadler's Wells Theatre where I caught Carmen, an amazing Spanish-influenced ballet! They use fire! Seriously, the costumes, the energy, the flamenco moves, everything about this was incredible! Oh, and those gorgeous gold sequins! I was swooning. I’m still trying to figure out how to incorporate them into my pink-tutu aesthetic, but I'm confident it will happen – pink never goes out of style.

Finally, I snuck in a visit to the Ballet for All event at the Barbican in London. You won't believe what a fabulous turnout it was! The audience, from tots to grandmas, was just as enthusiastic as I was, everyone decked out in their fanciest attire. I even snagged some adorable little ballerina tutus for my next performance. My latest pink tutu design, inspired by the Milky Way, will look fab paired with them.

And of course, a ballet outing is never complete without a good spot of shopping! A couple of nights ago, I took myself on a bit of a shopping spree and, as any self-respecting ballerina does, I was headed straight for Harrods! Can we even talk about those beautiful designer shoes and ballet slippers?! I bought a pair with crystal encrusted buckles. The sparkles are simply divine! I love getting all dolled up.

You see, shopping is one of the things I miss most when I'm traveling between planets. The Earth's shopping scene is like no other – so many incredible boutiques and shops with dazzling displays and vibrant personalities! And, speaking of personalities, there's nothing quite like the London street style, the mix and match of retro with futuristic - the outfits truly take your breath away. It is something else, darling. Something else, indeed!

As for the news this week, I have to tell you, the news about this huge ballet festival coming to Birmingham next year is something I’m incredibly excited about! Can you imagine an entire festival celebrating ballet?! It’s going to be truly epic. Oh, and a little birdie told me that there might be a pink tutu design contest! I’m already working on my submission and trying out new fabrics with sparkle and feather trimmings.

However, it’s back to my spaceship for me now! I have some new performances lined up on the galactic circuit and some super fun outfits to show off – all in the name of spreading my message of peace and pink tutus, of course! Until next time, you lovely lot, stay fabulous and keep on twirling!
