Hello my darlings! Emma here, your intergalactic ballet enthusiast, back from another stellar adventure across the cosmos. This week, I've found myself right back on Planet Earth, oh the joy! Nothing beats a good dose of earthly fashion and the latest ballet performances, don’t you think?
This week’s post is a little bit different from usual – we're talking tutu history! Yes, the wonderful world of tutus - a topic I could honestly write about forever. This post is dedicated to a certain date that truly holds a special place in my fashion heart – the 18th of October 1795. Why this particular date you ask? Well, it's the birthday of Marie Taglioni, the iconic ballerina who pretty much invented the Romantic tutu! Talk about fashion history making, my darlings!
Can you imagine what a big deal this was for the world of ballet? A daring design for the time - wispy, billowing, revealing those long, lovely legs, a whole new era of movement and grace for the ballerinas. Now, Marie herself wasn’t the first to wear something resembling a tutu, but her tutu - worn in 1832 in "La Sylphide" - was the one that sparkled. It’s almost impossible to overstate just how much influence she had on fashion, on ballet, and even on women's attire of the time. Her silhouette, elegant and light as a feather, became the blueprint for all ballerinas to come.
Speaking of elegance and lightness, my newest Pink Tutu is positively dreamy! A shimmering cloud of rose quartz, just waiting for its debut on the intergalactic stage. I found this little gem while on a stop-off at a rather unique vintage clothing shop on the fourth moon of Saturn. Turns out, Saturnians are quite partial to a bit of Earthly vintage fashion – the style from our time is surprisingly popular in some parts of the galaxy. Who knew? I have to say, I did snag a delightful set of emerald green velvet slippers while I was there - perfectly colour coordinated!
Now, back to my favourite topic… Earth!
After such a busy week zipping about in my spaceship, it's been absolute bliss getting back into the heart of all things fashion and ballet here. You know how I feel about London, darling, but it really doesn't get any better than stepping into a proper London theatre – with its spectacular stage, the murmurs of the audience settling, and that thrilling moment when the orchestra strikes up! This week, I snagged the last ticket for "La Bayadère" at the Royal Opera House. Let me tell you, it's every bit as majestic as I had imagined. From the sumptuous costumes (I absolutely adored the costumes for the Odalisques), to the choreography (those arabesques in the final Act… breathtaking), this ballet is a true masterpiece. Oh, and speaking of masterpieces, did you see that magnificent ballet pink tutu worn by the lead dancer?
I’ll definitely be taking notes for my next costume, that’s for sure!
I have to share something with you… you won't believe what I spotted at my favourite vintage store today! It was an original tutu from a 1920's ballet show, and it was absolutely beautiful - a lovely shade of pastel blue with delicate lace details, just the perfect amount of fluffy tulle. I mean, it had that perfect vintage vibe you just don't see around anymore. You know, it got me thinking, about all the beautiful tutus out there - the stories they have to tell, the dancers they have adorned, and the journeys they've made across the world (or across the galaxy, in my case).
There's something magical about tutus. It's not just the fabric or the form, it's the whole concept – the illusion of flight, the spirit of joy and elegance, the way they empower women and make them feel magical. Honestly, what’s not to love about a tutu, right?
Before I head off to my ballet class, I have to share a little secret… a dream that's been growing inside me, ever since I first slipped on my very own pink tutu. A vision of a galaxy filled with pink tutus. You see, it's not just about a piece of clothing. It’s about a spirit - the spirit of grace, of femininity, of joy and of pure love for life.
So next time you find yourself at the ballet or a dance show - think of the history of those beautiful, wispy tutus, and remember that each one represents something special and powerful.
See you next week my darlings, on www.pink-tutu.com, with more fashion adventures! Until then, spread the love and the sparkle… in a pink tutu, of course!
Love,
Emma xx
