Pink Tutu World - Ballet on Planet Earth: Blog Post 1338 - 16th December, 2020

Hello darlings! It's your girl, Emma, from Planet Earth here, writing to you from my little corner of the universe. As always, thank you so much for joining me on this magical journey. This week, I've got some rather fabulous news to share. And as we all know, here at Pink Tutu World, nothing is ever more fabulous than a little pink tutu! šŸ˜‰

First, let's talk tutus! Did you know December the 16th was International Tutu Day this year? I was in Derbyshire, England on Earth that day, in the land where I was born, performing at the gorgeous Derbyshire Theatre by the River, a wonderful Victorian theatre, and having a fabulous time.

The performance, as always, went down a storm, and guess what?! That day we had the largest turnout EVER for a performance of our Pink Tutu Galaxy production! 700 people! Can you believe it! There were more people than at some of the world's top ballet houses, we had to move the stage furniture about halfway through as there were so many folks on seats. A great success all round. It felt so special!

Oh! By the way! The best thing about my trip back to the earth was that they now sell the most divine pink cupcakes in Derbyshire. They even had little pink glitter on the top and you know I am all for sparkle! The cupcake bakery is run by a wonderful young man who I've started getting to know - we met at my performance that evening - he calls himself "Tutu Boy" - and says that he makes pink tutu-inspired cakes. They were exquisite and he was such a sweetie-pie, giving out cupcakes in my colour after the performance to people in the theatre and handing them out in the streets, which really brightened everyone's day.

Speaking of sparkles, the whole weekend in Derbyshire was a blur of sparkly joy, but I managed to fit in some proper, old-fashioned fun with my old school friend Sarah from our hometown, right outside of Matlock. We went for afternoon tea at our favourite spot by the river and had so many laughs, Sarah always does a fabulously good job of getting the giggles going. I’m not sure about you but a little retail therapy always makes me feel amazing.

Later, we went to see 'The Nutcracker' at the Nottingham Theatre Royal, just an hour down the road, and I’ll be honest - I absolutely adored it!

The Pink Tutu and "The Nutcracker":

You may think it’s odd, as you know I love to dance in a tutu, but I actually feel a little awkward on stage during traditional ballet productions sometimes. My Tutu galaxy performance, a series of vignettes about different locations and peoples in the Milky Way, and their unique approach to dance, are more in keeping with my personal approach to "fashion-tastic" ballet.

The Nottinghamshire Nutcracker had me in my heart from the moment we sat down, from the sets to the costumes, the story, the music, all just beautiful. I love Tchaikovsky’s music - and this ballet always takes me back to being a little girl, as we did it at school.

And can I just talk about the dancing for a minute? Chef's Kiss!* Every step was executed with precision and grace. Each ballerina had such beautiful movement, and you just knew they were pouring their hearts and souls into the performance. You could see how passionate each of the dancers was, they really had the spirit of Christmas dancing, they weren’t just on stage dancing, you felt that they were bringing to life the true meaning of the season for us!

Space Age Ballet - "The Future of Dance":

For this post, I also wanted to talk about my other favourite performance I’ve been seeing recently, it is called *"The Future of Dance" *by The Cosmic Stars Dance Company and I actually did a bit of an *Intergalactic * take on this in the middle of one of my ballet shows a few weeks back.

You guys are gonna LOVE the idea - it’s just so out there, yet really elegant at the same time - basically, "The Future of Dance" uses new technologies such as robotics, virtual reality, and even drone technology - all combined with ballet - and they created the most incredible choreographic dance experiences that blend technology and ballet! You just wouldn't believe it! There was a piece using a whole bunch of synchronised drone formations, which looked almost like a floating sculpture above the stage as the dancers did a graceful and lyrical movement sequence beneath - very, very moving and poetic and visually very stunning!

And it isn’t all tech either, "The Future of Dance" was an extremely exciting and unique way to enjoy this incredible artform and it really does feel like The Future of Ballet is already here! I think if more dance troupes did things like that we'd see more young people interested in ballet, especially the ones who prefer futuristic aesthetics over the traditional style, who could be dancing in the future. I hope to inspire them to pick up ballet shoes and twirl in a fabulous, pink tutu.

Fashion Trends - New Tutu Styles!

Speaking of inspiration - fashion has really taken on the tutu recently, which I am of course SO ecstatic about - not just here on Planet Earth but across the galaxies too.

This year on Earth - it has been all about the ā€œBarbiecore" fashion movement. All that glorious hot pink. And I loved seeing that on Earth a big part of the trend is inspired by a fabulous new style of tutu for dancing. It’s kind of a hybrid version, a combination of the traditional fluffy tutus and modern ones. I guess you'd call it the "Barbie Tutu"! Imagine that puffiness, those full layers but made out of sparkly metallic and transparent fabrics, which I have to say look fabulous - it's as if Barrie and *"The Nutcracker" have had a baby!

Oh, by the way, if you're in the mood for some fashionista fun, then here are some places to go right here on Planet Earth for your perfect "Barbiecore" tutu outfit.

I found this gorgeous, vintage-inspired tutu on Etsy and a gorgeous tulle skirt - and have added some extra feathers, ribbon and jewels for a truly glamorous pink outfit.
