Planet Earth Post #1438: Ballet on Planet Earth - 16th November 2022

Hello my gorgeous space-turtles! šŸ¢šŸ’–āœØ Emma here, your favourite pink-tutu wearing, cosmic-ballet loving blogger, back from another adventure in the Milky Way! Buckle up, because this week’s post is a whoosh through the galaxy and whirl back to dear ol’ Planet Earth - all in the name of fabulous, pink, and everything ballet!

Cosmic Tutu Diaries: A Planet Earth Rendezvous

I’ve been zipping between galaxies, as always, but something pulled me back to my beloved Earth this week. You see, my dear Earthling friends, it’s the 16th of November, and that means… 🄁 World Ballet Day! How could a cosmic ballerina miss such a spectacular celebration?!

World Ballet Day - a day to revel in the artistry of graceful movement, to admire the history and evolution of ballet, and to appreciate the tireless work of those who bring stories to life through leaps and pirouettes! Every year, it’s an exciting day for ballerinas across the universe (and let's face it, what’s more universal than the magic of ballet? šŸ˜‰).

And oh, my dear readers, let me tell you about my World Ballet Day celebrations…

Ballet Wonderland:

First stop was the Royal Opera House in London, of course. It’s just not a proper World Ballet Day without a proper performance, and a dose of good ol' British heritage, darling! They were showing the exquisite ā€œSwan Lakeā€, with the Royal Ballet’s stunning dancers making every swan dive and turn so hauntingly beautiful. The energy in the theatre was electrifying - everyone in the audience was entranced by the dancers’ skill.

Afterwards, I indulged in the most magnificent Ballet Brunch - champagne flutes and pastel-coloured petit fours amidst the hushed elegance of the opera house foyer. Heavenly!

But it wasn’t just about seeing the greats, my lovelies. My heart belongs to the little ones, too.

A Ballet Bootcamp: The Next Generation

I couldn't resist sneaking in a visit to the Royal Ballet School - what better place to celebrate World Ballet Day than amongst those learning the craft? They were doing their annual open classes - a spectacle of budding ballerinas stretching, jumping, and leaping to the magical rhythms of ballet music! It was so much fun, watching them absorb each move with such dedication. Their love for dance shines brighter than any star in the universe! ✨ I think I even managed to sneak in a few tips (and some cosmic glitter) during their break. šŸ˜‰

The highlight, though, was this year's Ballet Masterclass led by a legend herself, Sylvie Guillem. My favourite ballet star, this woman is pure magic, grace, and power rolled into one tutu-wearing powerhouse! And to witness her coaching, with that incredible insight and artistry? You’ll excuse me if I practically skipped out of there, giddy and bursting with inspiration. šŸ’–

World Ballet Day is more than just performances. It's a reminder that every pirouette and pliĆ© tells a story, and every leap can carry you across galaxies. It’s a celebration of the hard work, dedication, and artistry that takes dancers to incredible heights. And hey, let’s face it, the sheer elegance and beauty of ballet make even the dullest of Mondays sparkle with a touch of cosmic magic! šŸ’«

Cosmic Tutu Corner: A Look Back In Time

On World Ballet Day, I couldn’t help but think about the history of ballet and my favourite subject, the history of tutus! You see, my dear readers, ballet wasn’t always this sparkly, spectacular affair.

There was a time when dancers performed in plain tunics and breeches – think medieval times, my lovelies. 🤢 Not exactly the glamorous spectacle we enjoy today, is it?

It was the French choreographer Marius Petipa, you know the man who designed the fabulous ā€œThe Sleeping Beautyā€, who really gave the ballerina’s dress that glamorous flair. And from there, the tutu bloomed and blossomed into all sorts of spectacular designs - from the short and cheeky ā€˜classical tutu’ (Ć  la ā€œSwan Lakeā€) to the elegant ā€˜romantic tutu’ (just picture ā€œLa Sylphideā€), all culminating in the majestic full-length tutus you see on those ā€œDon Quixoteā€ ladies - oh, how those tutus truly bring out the grand, majestic grandeur of the art!

From Stage to Street:

Here on Earth, the ballet vibe wasn’t just limited to theatres and schools, darling. There’s been a real street ballet boom on Planet Earth this week - think flash mobs and pop-up performances in public spaces! There’s a real sense of magic when you least expect it, like witnessing a breathtaking performance unfold against the backdrop of everyday life - a busker’s dance routine, a group of dancers gliding through a bustling market… It’s all about sharing that ballet spirit, reminding us all that the beauty of dance can bloom anywhere, anytime.

The Pink Tutu Challenge

Oh, speaking of spreading the joy, this year, I’m adding my own sparkle to World Ballet Day with a special challenge for you my gorgeous, earthbound friends! This year, I want you all to join the #PinkTutuChallenge!

It’s simple. Take a picture in your favourite pink tutu – it can be a ballet tutu, a costume tutu, or even a fun fashion tutu – and share it on social media with the hashtag #PinkTutuChallenge! And, my lovelies, let's be creative - remember this challenge is for the whole world to join - be it your little one in their ballet costume, you taking a picture with your friends in your pinkest attire, a cat in a pink tutu for all I care. Let’s make the universe pink and glittery! šŸ’–

Cosmic Ballerina Style Guide:

I love World Ballet Day, and of course, it’s all about fashion too. Here’s my little cosmic guide to help your ballet-themed wardrobe stand out. Because darling, who doesn't love a little tutu-tude, right?

  • Pink is the Power! Pink is THE colour for ballet. From the vibrant bubblegum hues to the delicate baby pink shades, every shade is a celebration of life, elegance, and the dance!
  • Add Some Bling: Be a star wherever you go, my darling! Diamonds, crystals, rhinestones…the more sparkle, the better!
  • Get Creative With Textures: Lace, satin, tulle - mix and match those fabrics for that ultimate elegant touch! A satin top paired with a tulle skirt - oh, that's ballet bliss!
  • The Shoe Game: Let’s not forget the ballet shoe - whether it's the classic satin slipper or the elegant pointe shoe, your shoes can complete your outfit. Don't forget those fabulous glittery socks to go underneath!
  • Embrace the Ballerina Spirit! Don't forget to add your cosmic flair. Think about statement earrings or necklaces with star accents, maybe some galaxy-printed hair bows, or a pair of pink galaxy shoes! šŸ’–

Final Curtsy:

Well, my gorgeous readers, it’s been a whirlwind tour of Planet Earth - all in the name of Ballet! And as my little pink spaceship rockets back into the vastness of space, I’ll leave you with this - remember, darling, you don't need to be on a stage to be a ballerina. You don’t need to be in a theatre to experience the magic of ballet. All you need is that heart of a dancer and a spark of that cosmic spirit. šŸ’–

And always, my loves, remember, be bold, be glamorous, and most importantly, embrace that pink tutu magic.

Catch you next week for another intergalactic adventure, darling!

Love, Emma xoxo
