Ciao bella! It’s Emma from Derbyshire, here in sunny Milano, Italy, and let me tell you, this week has been an absolute dream! Every Wednesday, I hop on the pinkest tram in Milan (don’t even get me started on how gorgeous it is – think Art Deco, with swirls of fuchsia and shimmering gold!) and take you along for the ride of my life. And let me tell you, this Wednesday was all about romance, sparkle, and the most incredible ballet I've ever seen!
So, where did our adventure begin? Let's just say, I'm a firm believer that every day should start with a good dose of indulgence, and for me, that translates to a steaming cuppa and a decadent slice of panettone from the little café across the road from my chic little apartment. (If you're ever in Milan, trust me, you have to find it – it's a secret gem tucked away in the most charming corner.)
I slipped on my new pink tutu (a little frilly number with delicate lace details that made my heart flutter) and, armed with my trusty travel sketchbook and a pink sparkly pencil, I decided to walk the streets of Milan, taking in the city's buzzing energy. Christmas may be over, but Milan was still dripping in sparkle, and the festive decorations - twinkling fairy lights adorning the grand archways of the Duomo and towering Christmas trees lining the shopping streets - made the city feel magical.
As I ambled past the fashion boutiques along the Via Montenapoleone, a flash of ruby red caught my eye. It was a gorgeous vintage hat with feathers and tulle, and oh, the way it swayed as I swirled past the mannequins in the shop window! You could say I was tempted… and you could say I indulged! (Let’s just say that vintage red hat now occupies a place of honour on my dressing table, patiently waiting to adorn my head for the next Milan adventure!)
After a delectable lunch of truffle risotto at a charming little trattoria in the heart of the Navigli district (try the local Milanese specialty “Cotoletta alla Milanese”, you’ll thank me later!), it was time to experience something truly special – the "Nutcracker" ballet performance at the Teatro alla Scala. The Scala is renowned as one of the world's most prestigious opera houses, and believe me, it did not disappoint.
The theatre itself is breathtaking! Think marble, gold leaf, intricate carvings, and velvet red plush seating. The entire space emanates an atmosphere of grandeur and history that is just magical. And when the lights dimmed and the orchestra began to play, the magic really started!
The dancers were extraordinary, their movements fluid, elegant, and almost impossibly graceful. The costumes were simply stunning - an explosion of tulle, sparkles, and velvet in a breathtaking kaleidoscope of colour, from the delicate ballet slippers of Clara to the grand, feathered headwear of the Sugar Plum Fairy.
The performance captivated my senses - the sweeping orchestral music, the swirling pirouettes, the captivating storyline… it was a complete feast for my imagination! The emotions ranged from childlike wonder to poignant sorrow, and as Clara navigated the world of her dreams and the reality of the real, my heart soared with her.
It’s true what they say about the “Nutcracker” – it’s truly magical! And for a true “pink tutu” enthusiast like myself, the sheer delight of seeing all those glittering costumes on stage was enough to make me do a little happy dance right there in my seat!
After the show, I had to rush off to a rehearsal at the studio in my little apartment building. Yes, you read that right! Every Wednesday, I sneak into my little pink paradise (my living room transforms into a ballet studio complete with a mirror and barres – don't tell the landlord!) for a ballet practice session. And there’s nothing quite like the feel of that pink tulle swirling around me, especially as I execute a grand jeté and imagine myself waltzing through the opulent halls of the Scala.
Feeling energized after a fulfilling day of ballet and a delicious dinner (carbonara, my favourite!), I slipped into my pajamas, took a luxurious hot bath with bubbles and pink bath bombs (essential for a true ballerina’s relaxation routine!), and decided to delve into my travel journal, scribbling down notes for tomorrow's adventures, which included exploring the stunning gothic Duomo in the morning, a visit to the magnificent Castello Sforzesco, followed by a ballet performance in the beautiful Piazza della Scala.
Before you go, I’m sure you are wondering, “what about the tutus?!” And I’m so excited to share this – tomorrow is a big day. A group of young ballet students will be performing their favourite routines in a street ballet performance in Piazza della Scala! So much pink tulle, it’s gonna be amazing!
