Hello my lovely tutu-tastic friends! 👋 It's Emma here, bringing you a brand new instalment from the heart of the Big Apple, New York City! 🗽✨ This week, I'm bursting with excitement after an absolutely phenomenal few days twirling, dancing, and taking in all the delights that this magical metropolis has to offer.
A Derbyshirian in the City That Never Sleeps
This past week, my journey started back in the rolling hills of Derbyshire. My parents always said "a change is as good as a rest" and goodness knows, I'm never one to refuse a change, especially if it involves dancing! 😄 So, packing my pink tutu, some sparkly accessories, and my trusty travel ballet shoes, I said goodbye to the Peak District for a few days and headed straight for the big lights of New York City.
Now, I've got to confess, taking the tube down to St Pancras and catching the plane over to JFK airport felt a little surreal. Imagine, me, a girl from Derbyshire, heading to the city that inspires the entire world! It still sends a shiver down my spine, even after visiting many times.
Catching the Subway Symphony
As always, arriving in New York and finding my way to my apartment near Central Park was an adventure. Let's just say, navigating the subway was a whole new level of "peak hour" chaos! I felt like I was in a whirlwind of people, laughter, and, of course, the signature "Honk, Honk!" of yellow cabs. But you know what? I wouldn't have it any other way! There's just something electrifying about the energy of this city. ✨
Stepping into a Ballet Dream at the New York City Ballet
The absolute highlight of this trip was without a doubt attending the New York City Ballet at the Lincoln Center. 😍 I’ve been saving for this for months, and let me tell you, it was worth every penny and then some! The entire experience felt like a magical dream, and my heart felt as light as a ballerina's leap! From the stunning sets to the jaw-dropping performances, I was mesmerized from the moment the curtains opened to the final applause. Every single detail, from the dancers' costumes to the lighting and the orchestra, was utterly perfect. The power of dance!
A Spot of Shopping in Midtown
What’s a trip to New York without some retail therapy, right? 🛍️ This time, I was on a mission to find the perfect pink tutu for the new performance I'm putting together, "A Midsummer Night's Dream in Pink," inspired by the beautiful "Midsummer Night's Dream" performance I saw just last week. Yes, I love incorporating Shakespeare's plays into my choreography. It’s a perfect marriage of words and movement, wouldn’t you agree?
Midtown Manhattan became my playground as I explored shop after shop, trying on various tutu designs. Finally, I discovered a gem hidden away in a quiet side street, a store called "Tutus and Dreams" – how fitting! I landed upon a glorious, layered, pale pink tutu with delicate sparkles, just waiting for its debut. You bet I'll be sharing photos on my blog soon!
Finding Inspiration Everywhere: From Broadway to the Street
New York never ceases to amaze me with its blend of culture, history, and entertainment. This trip, I fell head over heels for the iconic “Empire State Building.” Its shining beauty is hard to miss, standing proudly in the city skyline, a symbol of strength and ambition. 🏙️ I spent a delightful afternoon wandering through Central Park, its green expanse a calming oasis in the bustling city. 🌳 I also couldn't resist a trip to Times Square, that exhilarating heart of the theatre world. And yes, of course, I saw a show – a smash-hit Broadway musical. You know me, always eager to soak up the theatre atmosphere and admire the talents of others.
But you know what else I found inspiring? Watching talented street performers showcasing their incredible skills! From the dancers to the musicians and even the singers, their dedication and artistry made me appreciate the joy of creating art anywhere, anytime! It was a humbling experience, truly, watching ordinary spaces become platforms for incredible performances.
Pink Tutu Day: Spread the Tutu Love!
Of course, I've been spreading my tutu message wherever I've gone in the city! You might have seen me twirling along the streets in my pink tutu, bringing smiles and spreading the love. 😉 I want everyone to feel empowered to embrace their individuality and wear a tutu if they want to. It's not about perfection, but about joy, freedom, and letting your inner child shine!
A Farewell to the City that Never Sleeps
Well, it’s time to bid farewell to the incredible city of New York for now. The memory of twinkling lights, lively music, inspiring art, and the undeniable magic of New York will stay with me long after I head back to Derbyshire. I’ve got plenty of inspiration for my next tutu project, so I'll be working on that back home in my studio. 😉
