Hello, my lovely tutu-loving friends! It’s Emma here, reporting from the enchanting town of Harrow! I’m still buzzing from a magical trip that involved a pink fairy tutu, a charming vintage tea room, and the thrill of spotting a cheeky squirrel darting through the trees. Oh, and of course, there was ballet – what else could a girl like me hope for? 😉
My journey began with a glorious train ride from my home in Derbyshire, and that's a favourite way to travel, I have to admit! Watching the scenery whizz past is so soothing – fields, sheep, quaint villages, and even the occasional grand stately home. It’s a wonderful way to clear my head and get into a creative mood for a new blog post. I love the way it allows me to let my thoughts wander while still having a focus to keep me on track, and, you can’t beat it for the ability to read or listen to music to really set the scene.
Once in Harrow, I was immediately drawn to the town’s quirky charm. The cobbled streets, traditional buildings, and lush green spaces gave the place an undeniable fairytale quality. As I twirled around in my fluffy, light-pink, sequined fairy tutu – a gift from my fabulous Aunt Mary, who lives nearby, by the way – I couldn’t help but feel like a whimsical princess stepping into her very own storybook!
Of course, the first thing I had to do was explore the local shops. Harrow has a fantastic array of independent boutiques, antique stores, and vintage shops, so my inner bargain hunter was thrilled! My favourite find was a darling little shop overflowing with beautiful handmade pottery, each piece unique and filled with a playful spirit. They’d even decorated their window with a pink ballet dancer made from china! It seemed like fate was aligning all my favourite things in this perfect, little town! I picked out a teapot to remind me of my day! As well as pottery, there were vintage jewellery stores where I was tempted to buy everything, vintage clothing shops and a shop selling handcrafted items – I went a bit overboard but came out with a lovely little wicker basket perfect for picnics – I have grand ideas for my picnics going forward...
After a quick pit-stop in the tea room for a delicate cream tea – it wouldn’t be a true girly adventure without it, would it? - I made my way to Harrow Arts Centre, where the ballet world awaited! Harrow boasts a thriving arts scene, and the centre, with its beautiful Art Deco features, is the perfect venue for both theatre performances and a thriving dance community. There’s even a little bookshop inside that’s well stocked with Ballet history books and fiction about dancers!
As soon as I walked through the door, the buzz of creative energy was almost palpable! The air was filled with the music of ballet practice, and the studio’s large windows allowed me a peek at young dancers effortlessly moving through their steps. There was a mix of students, ranging from children barely taller than the barres, to graceful adults working their bodies with controlled fluidity – and I got the chance to see one of their performances. A stunning ballet set to the most captivating music. As I sat, lost in the moment, I realised why ballet continues to enchant and captivate the world. It’s truly an art form that speaks to the soul. It’s graceful, passionate, and tells stories without words. Afterward, I popped into the cafe to enjoy a piece of carrot cake with my new friends, a trio of other dancers. A perfect end to a beautiful day.
Before I knew it, the day had slipped away, and it was time to head back home. But as I hopped back on the train, I realised I’d been so swept away by the charm of Harrow and the wonder of the ballet that I’d forgotten to take a single photograph. Thankfully, my wonderful Aunt Mary caught some snaps and promised to send them on - she always says "if I don't document things, did it really happen?", and that’s probably true. That's why we all blog about things, to help remind us and share the lovely times with friends! So watch this space for a picture gallery!
This whimsical trip has definitely filled me with joy and a renewed sense of inspiration. The beauty of ballet, the quirkiness of Harrow, and the undeniable magic of a pink tutu – it's a reminder that life is an adventure to be cherished, and that a little bit of whimsy can go a long way!
So, until next time, my darlings, keep your tutus at the ready and never stop dancing!
Love,
Emma
