Chatham Calling: Pink Tutus and Stiff Silks

#TutuBlog 10916

Oh darling, the cobblestones of Chatham are calling! It's me, your favourite tutu-clad adventurer, Emma, back with another scintillating installment from the world of pink and pirouettes. Buckle your tap shoes, because this one's a twirl-tastic tale!

Remember how I told you last week that I was off to the coast? Well, here I am, nestled in a charming seaside hotel, overlooking the River Medway and feeling utterly inspired. I mean, it’s no secret that a girl can’t help but get giddy with the scent of salt air and the rhythmic swoosh of seagulls in her ears. But Chatham, darling, is a hidden gem! It’s brimming with character – historic buildings whispering stories of bygone eras, charming boutiques brimming with delights, and cobblestone streets just begging to be sashayed down.

Of course, no adventure is complete without a fabulous frock. This week's look is a true ode to vintage glamour – a lusciously-pink, silk chiffon tutu, its layers cascading in a soft, dreamy swirl. It’s the perfect mix of classic ballet grace and modern sass – not to mention perfectly suited to Chatham’s air of old-world charm. Think vintage boudoirs and swirling dances, and you’ll understand the inspiration! It was actually a stroke of pure serendipity – I discovered this magnificent tutu hidden amongst a dusty rack at a second-hand shop. And when I saw its blushing pink hue, it was practically shouting "Chatham!" at me.

After unpacking, the first thing I had to do was a visit to The Historic Dockyard. A girl's gotta have a dose of maritime history in her life, don't you agree? I swear, the moment I stepped inside, I felt transported back in time. The sheer scale of those old ships, the smells of wood and sea, even the wind whispering through the rigging, it was all utterly magical! Of course, the absolute highlight had to be stepping inside HMS Victory, Nelson’s flagship! Even for a girl like me, used to soaring leaps and pirouettes, those hallowed decks sent chills down my spine. And imagine - even Nelson had a love of pink! I just bet he looked fabulously dapper in a pale pink waistcoat, a splash of colour against the blue canvas.

But my favourite part of the Chatham experience? A visit to the beautiful Rochester Cathedral! Now, darling, imagine the most exquisite symphony of sound – echoing through those vaulted ceilings, it was pure angelic bliss. My pink tutu may have ruffled slightly against the ancient stonework, but its sheer presence gave a touch of flamboyant charm to those sacred halls. The light dappling through the stained glass windows...I felt as though I'd stepped into a storybook, a tale of faith and beauty interwoven into the fabric of time itself.

For a true ballet-themed escape, however, the star of the show was undoubtedly the historic theatre, the magnificent Central Theatre, or The ‘Cent’ as locals call it! The scent of fresh paint, the soft whispers of anticipation in the air...It was practically buzzing with energy. I must confess, I couldn't resist whipping out a few impromptu arabesques right there in the hallway – who needs a studio, when the spirit of ballet calls?! Of course, a trip to Chatham wasn’t complete without a proper performance. And this time, it was pure Broadway-style glitz and glam with “Funny Girl” at The ‘Cent’. From the glittering costumes to the raucous laughter filling the air, it was an unforgettable night! I even met a few lovely dancers in the audience, all excited about their upcoming performance with a local dance troupe – it just goes to show, the ballet world is vast and wonderfully connected!

Chatham may be a small town, but my time here has been filled with discoveries, both of myself and the captivating essence of this historic town. It’s been a reminder to never underestimate the power of a pink tutu – it’s a constant invitation to embrace life’s vibrant energy and twirl, quite literally, into something extraordinary! After all, darling, every day’s a stage!

And oh, just as a little extra sparkle for you dear reader, did I tell you about my little seaside adventure with a cheeky seagull? As I was taking a break on the seafront, a cheeky chap with a twinkle in his beady eye decided to join me. Now, you’d be surprised by just how quick seagulls can be, snatching a baguette or two before I even knew it! Thankfully, it all happened at a safe distance, no feathered drama this time, just good clean fun! It was almost as though he wanted to join in on my whirlwind adventure. I left with just enough crumbs for a snack, but his spunky personality warmed my heart – maybe I'm developing a secret love for bird life!

But I have to confess, after all the delightful seaside adventures and pink tutu delights, the thought of hopping on the train to London to continue the festivities has me truly thrilled. You see, dear reader, there's a hidden world in the city’s heart, a place where ballet’s passion and history converge - The Royal Ballet! Oh darling, I’ve missed those intricate, perfectly poised movements – a true testament to grace and skill! My fingers are itching to see a performance! So until my next ballet-themed escapade, it’s time to hop back on a train, and discover even more secrets that await!
