Hello darlings! It's your favourite pink-tutu-clad time traveller, Emma, back with another captivating journey through ballet history!
Today's adventure takes us to a truly magical date - September 30th, 1845! This is a year that marks a special milestone, as it's the year that saw the dazzling debut of none other than The Sleeping Beauty, in Saint Petersburg! Yes, that iconic fairytale! Can you believe it's been that long since Princess Aurora drifted off to sleep in a flurry of beautiful ballet magic?
Now, my fellow tutu enthusiasts, let's step back in time. Picture this: St Petersburg, with its grand buildings and imperial glamour. Think beautiful grand theatres with intricate details and lavish chandeliers โ what a dream for a ballet fanatic like myself! The music! Oh, the beautiful music โ the score is utterly captivating.
Back in 1845, the tutus worn by the ballerinas would have been a bit different to our modern interpretations. Imagine romantic and delicate dresses with layers and layers of tulle. They weren't the incredibly short tutus we're so accustomed to seeing today. Oh, the excitement!
Now, let's talk about fashion, my favourite subject. The ladies of St Petersburg would have been impeccably dressed, wearing exquisite ball gowns. The gowns would have been crafted from sumptuous fabrics โ silk, velvet, satin โ and they would have featured intricate embellishments such as beading and embroidery. Imagine a stunning mixture of elegance and flair.
Of course, no ballet outfit is complete without the finishing touches. For a performance on September 30th 1845, imagine elegant shoes in white or pink, tied with ribbon laces, adding to the elegance.
It's not just about tutus, you know! Fashion was just as important then as it is today. There was an entire industry behind making sure that ballet was an amazing visual experience as well as an emotional one!
And that, my dear friends, is why I love ballet! Not just for the elegant movement and expressive art of the dancers but also for the beautiful fashion and theatre that surround the art! It truly is a wonderful experience and an integral part of the human condition.
I have to admit, even with all my time-travelling adventures, it's always wonderful to be back in my home, Derbyshire, surrounded by my favourite shops. The local market is always brimming with colour and there are so many shops filled with treasures. You can't go wrong for fashion, or for beautiful things to make your tutus perfect!
This weekend, I'm attending a new production of The Sleeping Beauty at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden. You can bet I'll be dazzling in a pink tulle creation! It's amazing to be able to connect with my favourite ballets through both time and history.
And remember, my dears, every day is a good day to wear a pink tutu! Keep that tutu spirit alive! I'll be back next Tuesday with more adventures in #TutuTuesday. Until then, happy twirling!
Love and pink tutus,
Emma
