#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History – 19th August 1856 – Post #1286

Hello my darlings! Emma here, your resident Tutu Historian, and today, on this beautiful #TutuTuesday, we're venturing back in time, specifically to 19th August 1856. My lovely pink tutu (yes, another one! You know how much I adore a pink tutu) is shimmering in anticipation as we explore the fascinating evolution of this iconic garment.

Now, picture this: bustling Parisian streets, the air buzzing with artistic energy, and a wave of excitement rippling through the elegant theatres. It’s a glorious era for the ballet, and a special day for us tutophiles. You see, today we’re going to delve into a pivotal moment: the introduction of a brand-new tutu style!

We’ve just whisked ourselves to the beautiful Opéra Garnier, right here in Paris, where the iconic dancer, Marie Taglioni, took to the stage. And boy, oh boy, did she leave everyone breathless!

Her graceful movements, the perfect control of her form, and oh, those delicate pointe shoes – the beauty of ballet was on full display. But you know what stole the show? Her tutu!

Gone were the weighty, multi-layered tutus of the past. The new era had dawned – Marie was adorned in a light, single-layer tutu, shorter and fuller, a glorious billowing puff of tulle that accentuated her elegant leaps and pirouettes. The lightness and freedom this new design gave her dance was truly breathtaking.

It was revolutionary! This wasn't just a change of wardrobe, it was a bold move that shifted the way the world saw ballet itself. This iconic moment brought about a shift, an artistic revolution that favoured lightness, fluidity and a touch of the whimsical – exactly what we tutu lovers crave! It's not surprising that Marie Taglioni was known as the "fairy queen of dance". She was a force to be reckoned with and she revolutionised dance history, all thanks to a little something called the "tutu".

It wasn’t just a matter of aesthetics, you know. This new shorter tutu allowed for greater range of motion, creating an airy lightness and freedom of movement previously unimaginable. The graceful swish of the tulle as she twirled, the playful fluttering of the fabric – it was like a symphony of elegance, set to the music of a magnificent ballet performance.

From that point on, this "romantic" tutu, as it's fondly known, was the style of choice for leading ballerinas throughout Europe and beyond. It perfectly embodied the grace and beauty of the romantic ballet, adding a new dimension of femininity and whimsical delight to the already captivating art of ballet. The influence of this design? It ripples through time right to this very day, in the countless tutus we see in ballets all over the world.

So here I am, back in my present time, marvelling at the artistry and history behind this timeless piece of ballet history. And the truth is, this gorgeous garment, this beautiful billowing circle of tulle – is far more than just an article of clothing. It embodies an artistic revolution, an era of beauty, grace and pure wonder that resonates throughout dance history.

That’s not all, darling! There’s more exciting news for the world of tutu lovers!

As we all know, August is my favourite month, it's all about summer vibes, sun-drenched days and… well, you guessed it – TUTU parties! This year I'm joining the London Ballet's summer spectacular "The Swan Lake" celebration - what a delight! There will be ballet classes in Hyde Park, street performances, picnics in the sunshine, and naturally, a huge dose of dazzling tutus – oh, and did I mention I'll be doing a ballet performance at the "Twirling Tutus" fundraiser to support local dancers and their love for tutus. Of course, it’s all in aid of encouraging our love of dance and promoting the sheer joy of twirling in a beautiful tutu – an excellent excuse to break out my newest pink, frilly creation!

So here’s a thought for my lovely readers: what are your favourite memories associated with tutus? Any exciting adventures planned for this month, perhaps a fun performance in a whimsical tutu or a special day dedicated to the graceful twirl?

Until next Tuesday, keep twirling, keep shining, and don’t forget: there’s a little ballerina in all of us!

Emma

P.S. I'm headed to Edinburgh tomorrow, my beloved Derbyshire, with its lush green hills and whispering wind, can wait for another day! There are just so many glorious tutu-wearing opportunities in the enchanting Scottish capital! Do let me know what must-see places I shouldn’t miss!

P.P.S. As always, darling, remember, #PinkIsAlwaysIn and a pink tutu will always be the perfect companion to any day! #SpreadTheTutuLove!
