#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History - Post 1400: A Parisian Dream

Bonjour, mes amis! It's Emma here, your favourite tutu-loving time traveller, ready to take you on a journey through the wonderful world of tutus! Today is a special #TutuTuesday because we're diving into the fascinating history of the tutu, and guess what? Today is 26th October 1858! Imagine, being in Paris, with the bustling streets of the city, the elegant buildings, and, most importantly, the exquisite dance productions at the Paris Opera! The atmosphere would be positively intoxicating.

Paris - City of Dance

Paris in 1858! Can you imagine it? The city is just bursting with creativity, energy, and, yes, romance! The ballet scene here is particularly vibrant, and a special highlight today would have to be a performance at the beautiful Paris Opera. The sheer beauty of it would make any ballerina's heart skip a beat! I bet the ladies would have been adorned with the most fabulous, romantic tutus imaginable, and it's my job, my mission in life, to make sure the world remembers just how gorgeous they were!

Fashionable Frockwork: The Tutus of 1858

So, let's talk tutus! Now, the year 1858 was an exciting time for tutus. You see, earlier designs were quite elaborate - they were very full, cascading down to the floor. Imagine them, big and poofy like clouds! But in 1858, the ballet world saw a shift! Designers, particularly at the Paris Opera, started to create a shorter, more elegant version, which eventually evolved into the tutus we know and love today. These beauties would have been just perfect for the athletic ballerinas of the time - giving them a more free and graceful style, perfect for spinning and leaping!

You might think that these new tutus were made of delicate tulle, right? Well, not quite. In this period, the most common material used for tutus was gauze - very thin, see-through, and light, ideal for twirling on stage. Now, we may love tulle now, and believe me, I love me a good fluffy tutu! But back then, gauze gave the dancers the perfect blend of grace and airiness.

Speaking of ballerinas, can we just imagine the joy of stepping into these lovely tutus, in that elegant and artistic setting? Imagine feeling the light gauze on your skin, twirling with ease and beauty, under the sparkling lights of the Paris Opera House! The absolute epitome of Parisian fashion!

Pink, Pink, Everywhere!

And what would my trip be without some delightful pink?! Imagine a soft, rosy pink tutu, just the perfect colour to enhance the elegance and romanticism of the Paris Opera stage. I wouldn’t have dared to visit without a pink one myself, my own personal Parisian fashion statement!

My Pink Tutu Travels

Speaking of Paris! This gorgeous city has been a firm favourite in my time travel diary! From the elegant cafes of Montmartre, the chic boutiques along the Champs-Élysées to, of course, the amazing ballet productions. Paris truly has a way of inspiring and captivating. Imagine arriving at Gare du Nord in my darling pink tutu, a delightful mix of practicality and flamboyant femininity! There's something truly exciting about stepping off the train, my luggage containing a bevy of the latest fashions (yes, I'm quite fond of shopping for tutus, just as you are), into this beautiful, vibrant city!

The Magical World of Ballet

Oh, you know what I just adore about my time travel journeys? Witnessing the magical world of ballet! It's more than just dancing - it’s an art form that blends elegance, grace, and storytelling, making it just magical! In Paris in 1858, ballerinas were the stars of the show.

Now, my trip isn’t always filled with ballets and delicious macarons! There's a touch of adventure too! Think hopping on the back of a horse-drawn carriage, gliding through cobblestone streets, past bustling cafes, or a delightful evening stroll under the Eiffel Tower. There's just something about this period that I find absolutely captivating.
