Hello my darlings! It's Emma here, your time-traveling, pink tutu-clad ballet enthusiast, ready to take you on another historical fashion journey!
This week, I've found myself transported to a very special date: 13th December 1864. This is where the story of the tutu takes a very important turn! Now, I must admit, it wasn't a revolutionary change like the invention of the pointe shoe (I adore those!) but it definitely shifted the ballet tutu scene.
Before I dive in, let's be honest, a pink tutu always sets a special mood for the blog!

London Calling! As for our location this week? Why, the beating heart of the ballet world – London, darling! And believe me, things were bustling. Theatres like The Royal Opera House were the centre of fashionable attention.
Now, I must confess, getting here was quite the journey. I squeezed onto a first-class carriage, luckily, a rather charming gentleman offered me his seat (you know how we ladies adore those! 😊)
Let's talk a bit about how people got around. Now, trains were becoming all the rage - it made travel faster, even across entire countries! That is how I get around on my little time-traveling adventures, all thanks to my ballet skills and, of course, a pinch of time-traveling magic, darlings.
On This Day:The date we're focusing on, 13th December 1864, was no ordinary Tuesday! It saw the premiere of the ballet, "The Talisman." A spectacular production that graced the stage of Her Majesty's Theatre. The audience was utterly captivated, myself included! The ballet, a Romantic, Arabian Nights-esque dream, truly was a triumph.
But you might be wondering... How does this all relate to tutus? Well, this ballet brought a fresh look to the ballet tutu world, darling!
You see, this piece required a new design. A graceful, longer, and more romantic tutu, designed by Mme. Zulma, who we are eternally indebted to. She envisioned a tutu that cascaded down in a dreamy and almost fluid manner, creating a silhouette that whispered "fantasy and wonder."
It wasn't just about looks, darling! This longer tutu allowed the dancers greater freedom of movement - they could leap and swirl effortlessly, a dreamy symphony of movement, which, in my opinion, added to the mystical story. It even became known as "the Zulma skirt" or "the ballet skirt." How glamorous!
This design set the stage for future changes, where dancers wouldn’t need to just pirouette! It gave a much more delicate look with some amazing fluidity in the movement of the dances. This romanticism allowed them to be even more powerful in their moves! It was absolutely captivating to watch!
And the story is not just about fashion - this is the start of how tutus got that graceful, romantic look that has made them famous to this day!
The Tutu EvolutionFrom that moment on, the design of tutus became a fluid thing, changing and evolving as choreographers sought to embody different emotions in the ballets they created.
Some, darling, opted for the tight, frilly style that gave a beautiful sense of regality. Others favored the more flowy style of Mme. Zulma. And in all that creative energy, we saw the beauty and versatility of the ballet tutu, changing for a hundred years.
Can you imagine if they’d all remained stiff, or short? Think of what would be lost to the history of dance and performance! The tutu is more than just fashion, darling, it’s a part of ballet history itself.
The Magic of the Tutu!As always, darlings, thank you for joining me on this whirlwind tour through ballet history! We've learned so much about the evolution of the ballet tutu, especially how that wonderful change of style back in 1864 impacted the world of dance, and fashion.
Let's spread the love and pink tutus to everyone we meet! Until next Tuesday, stay lovely! And remember, darling, don’t just watch, embrace the magic of ballet!
Love always, Emma 💖
