#TutuTuesday: A Glimpse into 1865 - The Era of Romantic Ballet (Blog Post #1726)

Greetings, fellow tutu enthusiasts! Emma here, your trusty guide to the wondrous world of ballet and, of course, the ever-so-charming pink tutu.

It’s #TutuTuesday, and today we're taking a trip back in time to January 24th, 1865. Imagine the excitement: steam trains are whizzing across the countryside, gaslights illuminate the streets of London, and… yes, you guessed it, tutus are a delight on stage.

This time period is absolutely brimming with tutu history! This was the height of Romantic Ballet, and oh darling, was it dramatic. Think soaring leaps, passionate emotions, and ballerinas (clad in breathtakingly romantic tutus, of course) embodying ethereal spirits, captivating characters like fairies and sylphs.

To give you an idea, the iconic "Giselle", a ballet about a beautiful peasant girl turned woodland spirit, premiered in 1841. It’s the perfect example of that je ne sais quoi that captured hearts and captivated the world. I dare you to try not to be moved by Giselle’s tragic story while you gaze upon the tulle clouds of her dress as she spins through the forest.

And don’t get me started on the stunning costumes!

You might find yourself picturing the delicate wispy skirts in pale pinks and blues, the ethereal fabrics shimmering under the gaslight, adorned with a scattering of flowers - that's what Romantic ballet is all about! And imagine the ballet shoes – satin slippers, their soft pink reflecting the romantic stories that unfolded on stage.

Oh, how I wish I could whisk you back in time! Imagine witnessing Marie Taglioni (oh, such an ethereal being!), the first to wear a truly modern, bell-shaped tutu, dancing "La Sylphide" with its captivating choreography!

While my journey back to 1865 would involve a magical, rather than a steam-powered mode of transport, we can definitely experience the magic of that era. If you are feeling inspired, grab a friend and head out for a romantic ballet performance. Who knows, you might find your own "Giselle" or "La Sylphide" within.

Tutu Tuesday: Finding Our Own Romantic Flair

And to truly celebrate Romantic ballet, how about we get inspired by those captivating tutus? While I might be sporting a pink tutu today (I do always keep one handy, you know), perhaps you can think of a delicate, pastel-hued dress, or perhaps an ethereal fabric scarf flowing with every twirl?

So, here’s my challenge for you: This week, embrace a touch of romanticism! Let those pastel pinks and blues grace your outfits, channel your inner Giselle with some ethereal movements and… dare I say it… perhaps try on that dusty box of tutus tucked away in the attic?

Remember, we all have a little Romantic ballerina inside of us waiting to blossom!

Happy Tutu Tuesday, everyone!

Emma
