Hello darlings! It's Emma here, your favourite pink tutu-wearing time-travelling ballerina, back again for another #TutuTuesday! This week we're whisked away to the glamorous Parisian opera house on 14th March, 1865.
Oh my goodness, the excitement is just bubbling over! Can you believe it? Today is the premiere of Léo Delibes’ enchanting "La Source"! And it's not just the music that has me in a flurry; imagine this, my dears, tutus! Proper tutus!
This very day, we get a peek into the glorious history of the tutu as we know it - a beautiful, layered, multi-tiered explosion of tulle! Gone are the days of those stiff, heavy skirts. The modern tutu is born! It's light as a feather, yet so captivating, giving ballerinas the freedom of movement to soar like little birds.
Now, to give you the low-down, you see, up until now, the world of ballet had this "romanticized" vibe. It was all about flowing silk gowns, and honestly, the dancers were rather restricted! Can you imagine a beautiful pirouette without the ability to spin freely? A grande jeté hampered by a heavy gown? Simply not done!
And here comes Monsieur Charles Worth, a real fashion pioneer, and changes the game with a bang! He's a fashion maestro who just understood the feminine spirit, you know? He's dreamt up these dazzling tutus, which not only give our ballerinas the freedom to showcase their skill, but also accentuate their grace, their elegance... It's a dance of artistry, elegance and movement - simply beautiful!
Now, let me paint you a picture of what we can expect in Paris tonight. Imagine a grand, glittering opera house, chandeliers cascading with a thousand tiny twinkling lights, plush velvet seats and…the most fabulous dresses! The ladies are sporting luxurious silks, velvets, and gasp the first whispers of crinoline are making an appearance! I dare say it’s not quite the hourglass silhouette of today, but a subtle, charming curve has arrived! It's exciting times, my dears!
After the performance, you'll find me hopping onto the latest railway, (it's rather like a magic carpet - choo-choo) heading straight for the Grand Boulevards of Paris. Those shops, dear friends, they hold such secrets! Imagine delicate silks, shimmering ribbons, and an absolute ocean of exquisite lace - enough to satisfy every sartorial craving! It's quite a sight, this fashion parade, and you'll find me right in the middle of it all. Maybe a few of those lovely ladies at the opera house might even find themselves with a few tu-tus from my shop to enhance their wardrobes. Just think - perhaps some ladies would embrace their inner ballerina!
Don't forget my darlings, embrace your femininity!
Until next time,
Your devoted tutu aficionado,
Emma
