Hello my darling tutu-loving darlings! It's Emma here, your resident pink-tutu-clad time-traveler, back for another thrilling #TutuTuesday trip through history! Today, we're stepping into the enchanting world of the 1880s, where the art of ballet was taking dazzling new leaps and bounds.
From Derbyshire to the Parisian Stage:
Now, you all know I'm a Derbyshire girl through and through, but this week, I'm jetting (well, steam-train-ing) over to Paris! Ah, the city of lights, love, and oh-so-fashionable tutus! It's the very heart of ballet in this era, and believe me, it's a whirl of excitement! The Parisian Opera House is THE place to be.
A Glimpse into 1880s Ballet:
The year is 1880. You might think of tutus as the fluffy, frilly things we adore today, but back then, they were more streamlined and a little less "ballet-y". Imagine a tutu made of layers and layers of tulle, giving the dancer that iconic billowing effect. These were the "romantic tutus" and they were all the rage!
Fashionable Feathers and Fanciful Frocks:
Speaking of fashion, the 1880s were a delightful era for ladies' dresses! Think dramatic bustles, beautiful fabrics, and oh, those incredible hats! Imagine me waltzing into a Parisian theatre in a beautiful lilac gown, a feather boa around my neck, and a sparkling hat adorned with an enormous plume! Talk about making an entrance! And while I might not be able to rock the elaborate hairstyles, let's just say that there are many hairpieces to be discovered in antique shops in these times!
An Encore of History:
Now, let's talk about what makes this particular date, 20th July, so special! Did you know that a young prodigy named Mathilde Kschessinska made her ballet debut in the 1880s? She later became one of the most celebrated ballerinas of her time and graced the stage for over three decades! You can practically hear the music, can't you?
Tutus for All!
And just because tutus are all about freedom and fun, I say we embrace them every day! Go out there and wear pink, embrace your inner dancer, and let's bring back the romance of ballet! After all, every day is an adventure waiting to be danced!
Until next week, my dear friends, may your life be filled with twirls and delight!
Love, Emma xoxo
