Hello darlings! It's Emma here, your favourite tutu-tastic time traveller, ready to whisk you away on a sartorial journey through time, all from the comfort of your own living room! Today is a very special day for me. Not just because I'm finally wearing my new dreamy hot pink tutu (can't you just see the perfect little tulle fluff? sigh), but because it's Tuesday, which means one thing - #TutuTuesday!
And what a fabulous Tuesday it is. Today is the 17th of June 2025! It's a day for celebrations and for dancing. This date marks the annual London Fashion Week for Sustainable Fashion and what better place to celebrate a sustainable fashion staple than in the City of London itself! This fashion week is a perfect blend of contemporary design and responsible choices. It is a day for beautiful clothes, and beautiful clothes are always inspiring and motivating!
Before I jump into our tutu time travel though, a little bit about myself, if you are a new visitor here. I'm from Derbyshire, England - think rolling hills, quaint villages, and absolutely lovely scones - and let me tell you, if you ever come to visit, you must try them! The Derbyshire life is great for the soul, but as for fashion? chuckles Well, I have a tiny bit of a different opinion... Derbyshire, in my opinion, needs more pink! Much more pink! Thatās why I like to say the whole point of my life is to get everyone to wear a pink tutu.
Right then, are you ready for some tutu-tastic history? I am, so letās dance!
From Victorian Days to the Ballet
Did you know the first tutus didnāt start in a ballet studio? They actually started way back in the Victorian era! They were all the rage for fashionable ladies of the time - imagine that - a big poofy tulle skirt, often trimmed with lace and ribbons. Very dramatic for the times, right?
As time progressed, ballerinas discovered these fun little skirts. At first, they wore long, flowing skirts, just like the ones ladies were wearing out and about. Then the skirts started to shorten - imagine those big dramatic Victorian ladies dresses gradually getting shorter and shorter! But, tutus only really took off in the 1870s when we saw a transition from those full, bulky skirts into what we now know as a proper ballet tutu. This shift came about thanks to dancers like Marie Taglioni, and thanks to her they became what they are today - short and flowing, showing off a dancer's agility and artistry.
Now, imagine this for a moment: You're standing on stage in front of a packed audience, in this lovely billowing skirt. When you jump, it makes a swoosh sound! The way they twirl is breathtaking! And the tutus let them move around gracefully! No wonder tutus became synonymous with ballet.
The Evolution of the Tutu
Ever heard of a āRomantic Tutuā? Thatās what Marie Taglioni used to wear. They had this ethereal, fluffy look, and their light layers made dancing really special. We also have the classic "classical" tutu which became really popular during the grande Ć©cole (big ballet schools) period. They are still popular today and what we think of as a traditional tutu - think Swan Lake or Sleeping Beauty! Then we had āClassical-Romanticā tutu in between these styles! Think ballerina dresses, all those layers, and oh the way they float around a dancer when she dances! It's such a delightful experience to watch these dances at the theatre.
Tutus Beyond the Stage
Letās get something very clear here: tutus are not just for ballerinas! They're great for *every occasion, wouldn't you agree? If you're anything like me, you wear your tutus for absolutely everything: festivals, holidays, shopping trips...and I can almost guarantee I'll have on a tutu on this train trip from Derby to London to get a new one! Oh! And of course, ballet performances. You know what they say: never be too old to dance in a tutu, just like I will never be too old to get a new one, too!
I'm so thrilled to see how tutus have become a statement piece, even in everyday fashion. They are a reminder that every girl deserves to feel like a ballerina - whether she's on a stage or dancing around her own living room!
*Whatās Up with Pink, you ask? *
It all started with a pair of bright pink ballet slippers in a tiny little boutique in Paris! It was a perfect blush pink ā I bought a hundred pairs at the time! Then, naturally, I needed a pink tutu to go with them.
It was actually that one purchase that led to the creation of Pink Tutu - my online store where you can get all sorts of amazing tutus in every shade of pink you could imagine. Oh, and maybe a few not-so-pink ones, for that extra sparkle in your life! Just be warned: my shop is all about embracing those bright pinks and delicate rose gold shades ā because let's face it, life's too short for boring colours. Pink just says you're not afraid to be yourself.
*What is happening on 2025-06-17? *
Oh dear, you got me distracted about all my wonderful tutus there for a minute. It's good to remember we are here for the Ballet Tutu History. So, let's travel forward through time to that amazing date in the year 2025, and just imagine all the possibilities. In 2025, who knows, we could even see virtual reality or augmented reality ballets! We are already seeing this! Now, I have an incredible plan...and maybe it will be revealed on that day. What can I say, I always love to surprise my dear readers, you guys are the best! I always make sure thereās something new and fun, but youāll just have to wait and see!
And now, letās celebrate by remembering this - life is short. Wear a pink tutu! It'll definitely make your day. And for everyone out there in tutu-land, donāt be shy! Share your tutu looks with us. Use #PinkTutuLove and tag me! I would love to see them!
Until next Tuesday! Love, Emma x
