Tutu Tuesday in Mitcham: A Day of Whirlwind Fashion and Ballet Bliss #tututuesday
It’s Tuesday, which means one thing – it’s Tutu Tuesday! A day where we celebrate all things tulle, pointe shoes and the grace of ballet. Now, I know what you’re thinking, “Tutu Tuesday? Isn’t that just a bit too much?” But let me tell you, the tutu is anything but passé. It’s a timeless piece of fashion that transcends decades and styles.
As a dancer myself, I find a particular fondness in the classic ballerina tutu. You know, the romantic, delicate, and voluminous one that you've seen countless times in ballets like Swan Lake. Imagine layers upon layers of tulle, painstakingly hand-sewn, floating around your legs like a fluffy cloud – it’s pure ballet magic! And then there are the more contemporary tutus, those playful creations that break from the traditional form. I love a good statement tutu, the kind with daring designs, bright colours, and unusual textures that leave an indelible mark on the viewer. Think geometric shapes, asymmetrical cuts, and maybe even a touch of sparkle!
This week’s Tutu Tuesday is taking place in Mitcham. If you’ve never been, Mitcham is this hidden gem of a town located just south of London, full of independent boutiques and buzzing with a lively creative community. There are no big brands here, just a passionate selection of smaller shops that really stand out. So naturally, I felt compelled to share my love for the Tutu with the people of Mitcham.
Here’s what we got up to:
* **Morning Tea Party with the Locals**: The day began with a charming tea party at "The Secret Garden" café, an adorable spot nestled amongst a little lane in the heart of Mitcham. Over scones, sandwiches, and copious cups of tea, I talked with the lovely Mitcham ladies about the magic of the Tutu. They were mesmerised by the different styles of tutus we brought along and had some wonderful stories of their own to share. I swear, even the pigeons seemed to be tapping their little feet along to the sweet melodies playing in the background.
* **DIY Tutu Workshop at "The Crafting Hive":** I then took my tutu knowledge to "The Crafting Hive", a workshop space bursting with colourful fabrics, shimmering beads, and all manner of craft supplies. A few of us, with needles and thread in hand, got busy transforming plain white fabric into something utterly fabulous! There was so much laughter and genuine excitement amongst the ladies as we helped each other to create our very own little works of art. It’s an absolute delight to witness such joy in creativity.
* **Tutu Fashion Show at the Mitcham Market:** Finally, it was time to unleash our handcrafted creations! We transformed the iconic Mitcham market into a runway. This market was a feast for the senses. Every stall had its own unique character, showcasing colourful wares, artisanal crafts, and the aroma of freshly baked goods wafting through the air. It was the perfect setting for our Tutu Parade! We twirled and danced down the market, showing off our creative interpretations of the classic tutu. You could see the smile light up the faces of the stall owners and the market goers alike as we twirled past. It was a sight that warmed the cockles of my heart and gave Mitcham’s bustling marketplace an extra sprinkle of ballerina magic.
The day culminated with a vibrant mix of music, art, and sheer joy. We had people of all ages participating, from little ballerinas twirling with their mothers, to local residents cheering from the side lines. Even a few shoppers spontaneously joined the parade, dancing along to the tunes being played. I couldn't have dreamt of a better way to celebrate Tutu Tuesday.
Mitcham has a really special vibe and its friendly people warmed me with their open hearts. Their vibrant energy fuelled my love for the Tutu and reminded me why it’s so important to embrace what we love, and to let the beauty of it all shine!
So if you're ever in the mood for some whimsical fun, I highly recommend checking out Mitcham. Who knows, you might just see me there doing what I do best - bringing Tutu Tuesday to a town near you!
Don’t forget to join in on the fun, snap a pic of your favorite Tutu moment, and tag it #tututuesday! Let’s spread the joy of ballet and its sartorial marvels far and wide!
